The beauty of a long-running series is seeing an author hone his craft. Salvatore's early prose is functional but gets the job done. His later work, especially in the newer novels, is more reflective and nuanced. Reading in order lets you grow alongside the writer. You appreciate the simpler early tales and then get rewarded with the deeper, more complex stories later on.

For audiobook listeners, the narrator change is a factor! Victor Bevine narrates most of the series, and he's fantastic. But I think the recordings were also produced roughly in publication order. The consistency in narration might follow that original release pattern more closely, which could make for a smoother listening experience if you stick with publication order. Just a practical thought for those who consume their books by ear.

A disjointed narrator shift mid-character-arc can be jarring, and following the likely production order might minimize that.

Consider the length. This is a marathon, not a sprint. If you look at the 30+ book list and feel dread, maybe don't commit to the whole thing right away. Commit to the Dark Elf Trilogy. Three books. That's a complete, satisfying story arc with a beginning, middle, and end. If you finish 'Sojourn' and feel 'meh,' you can walk away having read a great fantasy trilogy. If you finish and crave more, then look at the Icewind Dale Trilogy as the next three-book adventure. Framing it as a series of connected trilogies rather than one massive tome is psychologically easier. The reading order is just the connecting thread between these smaller, manageable blocks.
