I tried the chronological read-through last year. Gave up after 'Cross Country'. The prequels aren't Patterson's strongest work, in my opinion. They feel rushed and lack the punch of the original novels. Starting with them almost made me quit the series before I got to the classics. My recommendation is to read the iconic ones first: 'Along Came a Spider', 'Kiss the Girls', maybe 'Pop Goes the Weasel'. Fall in love with the character as he was originally written. Then, if you're craving more backstory, go back to the prequels. They'll be a nice bonus, not a sluggish hurdle at the starting line.

Chronological order isn't always the best order for enjoyment. Sometimes the author's publishing journey is the better guide.

The short chapters are Patterson's signature. You can blaze through these books. A full chronological read would be a massive undertaking, but the pace of the writing makes it feel faster than it is. You think 'just one more chapter' and suddenly you've finished three books. If you're looking for a long, engaging series to lose yourself in for months, this is it. The order almost doesn't matter because the addictive quality of the prose will pull you through regardless.

Just pick a direction and start reading. The chapters will carry you along like a river.

I made a spreadsheet once, color-coded by timeline placement and quality rating. It's a problem. The cleanest true chronological list, ignoring crossovers, is: 1. 'Cross', 2. 'Double Cross', 3. 'Cross Country', 4. 'Along Came a Spider', 5. 'Kiss the Girls', 6. 'Pop Goes the Weasel', 7. 'Roses Are Red', 8. 'Violets Are Blue', 9. 'Four Blind Mice', 10. 'The Big Bad Wolf', 11. 'London Bridges', 12. 'Mary, Mary', 13. 'Cross' (yes, same title as #1, but this is a different book from 2006—this is where it gets messy), 14. 'Double Cross' (again, different from #2)... See? I told you. The reuse of titles for prequels and mainline books is the most confusing choice.

The Wikipedia page has a table with two columns: Publication order and Chronological order. It's the most authoritative free source. It clearly marks which books are prequels and where they fit. Why reinvent the wheel? Just go there, print the list, and use it as a bookmark. Every time someone asks this question in a forum, they get a slightly different list because people forget novellas or disagree on placement. Go straight to the source that's crowdsourced and maintained.

Then use that list to make your own decision about which path to take. The data is all there, presented neutrally.

Okay, here's a hot take: you could skip the first book and not be totally lost, but why would you? 'Along Came a Spider' sets up everything—his job, his family, his psyche. The chronological order is meant to be experienced from that starting point. Each book references prior events, sometimes heavily. For instance, 'Cross' deals with the aftermath of a major loss from earlier books. If you haven't read those, the emotional impact is flat. So even if the mystery is standalone, the character beats are sequential. My advice is to commit to the order. It's a long haul, but you'll appreciate the callbacks and returning characters. The series has its ups and downs, but Alex as a character remains compelling because you see him age and change.

I love how in online forums, asking this question is a rite of passage. The long-term fans sigh and post the list, the contrarians argue for chronological, and the casual readers say 'just read the good ones.' It's a beautiful cycle that probably started on Usenet groups in the 90s.

I borrowed 'Cat & Mouse' from a friend and loved it, then discovered it was book four. Had to hunt down the first three. It was worth it. 'Along Came a Spider' sets up everything—his home life, his job, his psyche. Reading 'Cat & Mouse' first, I was confused about the depth of his grief and his history with the FBI. Starting from the beginning made that fourth book even better on a re-read. So yeah, order enhanced the experience for me. It's a commitment, but the payoff in character understanding is big.
