Magazines like 'Analog Science Fiction and Fact' have been publishing this stuff for decades. Sometimes a short, sharp concept hits harder than a 500-page tome.
Linda Nagata's 'The Bohr Maker' and the rest of the 'Nanotech Succession' books are a fascinating blend of hard SF about nanotechnology, biotechnology, and space habitats. The physics of controlling nanotech swarms in microgravity and the societal implications are explored in depth. The space travel is often within a heavily engineered solar system, focusing on the interaction between human consciousness, evolved biology, and manufactured environments. It’s a more biological and computational take on hard SF, but no less rigorous.
I feel like a lot of recommendations skip the 'travel' part and jump to the destination. What about the boredom? The routine? C.J. Cherryh's 'Downbelow Station' and other Alliance-Union books capture the claustrophobia of merchant ships and stations. The physics determines the politics—who controls the jump points, how long shipments take, the economic strain of time dilation on trade. The 'travel' is via jump gates (a soft element), but the consequences of that travel—the isolation, the supply chains, the station life—are rendered with gritty, realistic detail. It’s hard SF about the sociology and logistics of a spacefaring civilization.
The 'Revelation Space' series eventually pays off the slow burn with some incredible cosmic-scale concepts. The Inhibitors, the galaxy-spanning war, the nature of the 'greenfly'... it becomes profoundly epic. But you're right, Reynolds takes his time. The hard SF elements—the cybernetic enhancements, the relativistic weaponry, the alien megastructures—are worth it if you have the patience. The ending of 'Absolution Gap' is divisive, but the journey there is filled with stunningly imagined, physics-based spectacle.

In the Slow Zone, near Earth, no FTL and no super-intelligence is possible, and the narrative treats that with realistic constraints. The humans stranded there are stuck with sub-light travel and primitive communication. It's a brilliant way to have a space opera while still paying homage to the physics we know in a specific, defined region of the setting. The tech in the Beyond is fantastical, but the rules are consistent and the contrast makes the hard physics sections feel grounded.
Michael Flynn’s 'The January Dancer' and the subsequent 'Spiral Arm' books have a space opera feel, but he puts real work into the astrography. Travel times between stars are long and consequential, and the ‘uld’ that enables travel is treated more as a natural resource to be mined and routed than magic. The economics and politics stem from those physical limitations.
I have a controversial take: some 'hard' SF is so obsessed with being right that it forgets to tell a good story.
