Philip Fracassi's 'Boys in the Valley' isn't space horror, but his upcoming novel 'Gothik' is supposed to be a spaceship horror story. Something to keep an eye on! Sometimes the anticipation of a new voice tackling a classic setup is part of the fun. I'm hoping for something that blends the religious horror he does so well with the isolation of a deep-space voyage.
John Langan's 'The Fisherman' is cosmic horror rooted in landscape and folklore, but his ability to build a sense of ancient, lurking dread is unmatched. If he wrote about a deep-space salvage crew investigating a supposedly derelict Generation Ship from a lost human colony, you just know the ship would feel like a haunted, malevolent entity. The 'ghosts' wouldn't be specters, but temporal echoes, genetic memories played out by the ship's bio-systems, or the manifested regrets of a dead civilization. The horror would be slow, atmospheric, and deeply woven into the architecture and history of the setting itself. It would be less about shock and more about a growing, suffocating sense of wrongness that has been waiting in the dark for millennia.
I'm just sitting here nodding along. So many good mentions. 'Solaris' is the one that really stuck with me, though. It's not scary in a jump-scare way, but it leaves this... melancholy unease. That ocean planet, just being there, dreaming its dreams and making our ghosts real. It doesn't care about us at all. We're just throwing our neuroses at it and it's throwing them back, like a mirror. That's way scarier than a xenomorph to me. A xenomorph wants to kill you. Solaris doesn't even know you exist, and yet it can destroy you more completely. Yeah. That's the good stuff.
Nick Cutter's 'The Deep' is set in a research station at the bottom of the ocean, but it's pure cosmic/biological horror that would feel right at home on an alien planet. A mysterious substance called 'Ambrosia' is found, promising a cure for a global plague, but it has terrifying side effects on the mind and body. The isolation, the crushing pressure, and the gradual unraveling of reality are textbook space-horror tropes, just in a different extreme environment. The creature or force they encounter is deeply alien and unsettling. It proves that the framework of a small crew in an inaccessible place, discovering something they shouldn't, is universally terrifying whether the setting is sea or stars.
If you're into manga, 'Gantz' has some truly horrific sci-fi exploration elements, though it's more about being thrust into deadly alien scenarios than voluntary space travel. The 'missions' where participants are teleported to fight bizarre and grotesque aliens in familiar Tokyo locations are pure survival horror. The aliens themselves are often designed to be biologically unsettling and creatively monstrous. The horror comes from the sheer brutality, the psychological toll on the characters, and the uncaring, game-like system that forces them into these encounters. It's not subtle, but it's effective at delivering shock, gore, and a deep sense of nihilistic dread about being a pawn in a cosmic game you don't understand.
