The interplay between urban and rural backgrounds in a college romance is a rich mine for realism that's rarely tapped. The culture clash, the different economic realities, the varying levels of freedom—that could form the core of a compelling and very real story without needing any external villains.

I think the expectation of a 'book' might be limiting the search. Serialized fiction on apps like Pratilipi or Wattpad, written in English or in translation, has tons of ongoing college sagas. The episodic format and direct reader feedback often keep the stories feeling current and close to the ground.

I'd love to read a college romance from the perspective of a non-engineering/medical student. The arts or commerce campus has a completely different rhythm, social structure, and set of pressures. That setting alone would feel fresh and potentially more realistic for a huge segment of students.

Check out 'Married But Available' by Abhijit Bhaduri. It's centered on corporate life, but the characters' backgrounds and their journeys through college and early career relationships are woven in with a lot of insightful, often humorous, observation about how love evolves (or doesn't) after those campus years.

Wait, is anyone else in this thread from Delhi University? The stories we could tell... maybe we should just collectively write one. Half comedy, half tragedy, 100% chaos. That would be the most realistic book of all.

Arranged Love: An Arranged Marriage Billionaire Romance
KRITI TRIPATHI

Is it possible for a cage to offer freedom?
A deeply conservative father, a mother resigned to the status quo, and the ghost of a twisted abuse have beat Kriti Tripathi into a numb kind of acceptance. The kind of acceptance that allows her to block out the uncomfortable realities that come with forming meaningful bonds with the people around her.
When her mother shoves her into an arranged marriage to a stranger, Kriti is forced to confront secrets that have painted her past black and surrendered her future to the demands of her possessor.
But Kriti’s quietly mysterious husband has been whispering things as she struggles to adjust to her new life. Things that make her think she might not be as trapped as she feels, and Kriti begins to suspect that this marriage might mean more than she expected.
Kriti isn’t the only one who has been keeping secrets. Even her perfectly responsible, too mature husband has something to hide.
Secrets have a way of revealing themselves, though. When the demons of her past show up on her doorstep, the secrets they‘ve been keeping threaten to destroy Kriti and her marriage; unless Kriti can reform herself into her own brand of a savior.
Does anyone have thoughts on love stories in Indian web-series or indie films? Sometimes the visual medium, with its specific locations, fashion, and soundtrack, captures the contemporary urban vibe even better. A show like 'Made in Heaven' or a film like 'Photograph' might offer that hit of realistic romance you're craving, just in a different format. The dialogue and the non-verbal cues can feel incredibly immediate.
I genuinely think the peak of the Indian college romance novel was in the late 2000s/early 2010s with the rise of Chetan Bhagat, Ravinder Singh, and Durjoy Datta. That era captured a specific moment of economic optimism and the explosion of English-language pop culture among urban youth. The college in those stories was a gateway to a new, modern India. Today's college romances have to contend with different anxieties—job market saturation, social media performativity, different political tensions. I'm not sure the current crop of mainstream writers has fully crystallized that new atmosphere yet.
I'm realizing a lot of these recommendations are from the 2010s. Makes sense—that was the peak of the Indian commercial fiction boom. I wonder what the current undergrads are reading for their college romance fix. Probably a lot of webcomics, fanfiction, and serials on apps. The core desire for stories about love in that specific life stage hasn't changed, but the formats and platforms sure have.
The next 'deep' portrayal might not come from a paperback you buy at the station, but from a scrolling narrative broken into 100 episodes on your phone, complete with reader polls influencing the plot. The intimacy might be even greater.
Does anyone else find that the most realistic elements are the friendships surrounding the romance? 'Five Point Someone' by Chetan Bhagat, while not primarily a romance, shows a relationship (Ryan and Neha) developing within a tight-knit, struggling friend group. The romance is affected by academic failure, family drama, and the dynamics of the trio. It's messy and imperfect. The characters are often selfish and make bad decisions. That imperfection is what makes it resonate with people who lived through similar college chaos.
I appreciate when the romance isn't flawless. The best ones in the genre, in my opinion, show the awkwardness, the missteps, the petty arguments. Love in your early twenties is messy. You're still figuring yourself out, so how can you perfectly figure out another person? Stories that acknowledge that, where the characters sometimes act selfishly or immaturely, feel more true than the ones where it's just a series of perfect romantic moments.
Look for reviews that mention 'realistic' or 'flawed characters.' Those are often the ones that leave a lasting impression because you recognize yourself or people you knew in them.
