Sherwood Anderson's 'The Egg' from 'Winesburg, Ohio' is a tragicomic take. A father's repeated failures to achieve success or happiness culminate in a bizarre, desperate performance with eggs for his son's guest. The overcoming is the son's understanding of his father's pathetic, beautiful ambition. The story inspires compassion for the forever-struggling.

What's that one with the scorpion? 'The Scorpion and the Frog' fable. The scorpion fails to overcome its nature, dooming them both. Wait, that's not inspirational at all unless the lesson is 'accept some failures are inherent.' Maybe not the right vibe!

Check out 'The Bet' by Anton Chekhov. A young lawyer fails to withstand 15 years of solitary confinement for a bet, learning too much about life and books. He leaves just before winning, rejecting the money. He overcomes the bet's premise by realizing the futility of the wager and material wealth. The inspiration is in his prioritizing hard-won wisdom over the 'prize.'

All of us have weaknesses that sever our confidence. But what if you have a certain weakness that people hold against you and bully you all your life for? Carolyn has such weakness— She was fat and had a face full of acne. People laughed at her body. They looked at her with disgust and compared her to her beautiful twin sister. Her own family treated her like a burden. When all of this became too much, she decided to kill herself. Except that.... They did it before she could!
You think I care about titles?” he asked, stepping even closer until I could feel the heat radiating from him. “Do you think that matters to me?”
“It should,” I said, my voice breaking slightly. “It matters to me.”
He tilted his head slightly, studying me. "Why? Why does it matter so much to you?"
“Because,” I said quickly, searching for the right words. “Because people like me... we don’t belong with people like you. You’re... you’re powerful, and I’m—”
“Beautiful,” he cut me off, his voice firm.
I froze, my words dying on my lips. “What?” I whispered.
“You’re beautiful, Sophia,” he said again, his tone softer this time. “And I’m tired of pretending I don’t notice it. You think being a maid defines you, but it doesn’t. Not to me.”

That collection 'Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul' has some real gems tucked in there. I remember a story about a kid who kept getting cut from the basketball team, only to realize his real talent was in coaching the younger kids. It's less about the big win and more about finding your place, which sometimes feels more real than the typical underdog story. The writing isn't fancy, but the messages about resilience really stick with you long after you finish reading.
Those books were everywhere when I was in school, and for good reason—they tackle failure in a way that doesn't feel like a lecture from an adult.
I'm partial to 'Daring Greatly' by Brené Brown. Her research on vulnerability frames failure, shame, and the fear of not being enough as the biggest barriers to a wholehearted life.
The inspiration comes from the radical idea that the courage to be imperfect, to show up and try even when you might fail, is the foundation of creativity, love, and belonging. It's not about overcoming failure to win; it's about accepting that failure is part of being in the arena at all.
Seconding the 'Red Rising' mention. Pierce Brown doesn't let his characters breathe. Just when you think they've overcome, he knocks them down twice as hard. It makes their resilience feel earned, not plot-armored. The motivational takeaway is pure, stubborn defiance.
I lean towards weird fiction for this. 'Piranesi' by Susanna Clarke is about a man living in a limitless, flooded House, his memory a failure. He is content until clues about his past begin to surface. His 'overcoming' is a gentle, curious unraveling of a terrible truth, but he approaches it with wonder rather than rage. The inspiration is in his model of confronting world-shattering change with innocence, grace, and a steadfast commitment to kindness and observation. It’s a lesson in how to face catastrophic personal failure (of identity, of history) without losing your essential, good self. It’s breathtakingly unique.
What about the failure of belief? 'The Sparrow' deals with a Jesuit priest whose faith-driven mission ends in absolute catastrophe. The novel is a deep exploration of grappling with the failure of your god to protect you. The overcoming is about finding a way to live with unanswerable questions.
