I find the standalones more rereadable for analyzing craft. The first read is for the story, the tension. The second read is to see how he built the trap, how he planted clues to character, how the prose foreshadows the collapse. Because they're so tightly constructed, you can appreciate the architecture more on a revisit. The McGee books are more about spending time with the characters on a reread. The standalones are about marveling at the precision engineering of a perfect, self-contained narrative machine. Both offer different kinds of pleasure.
Honestly, I find the standalones more re-readable. The McGee books are fantastic social documents of their time, but the self-contained novels feel tighter and more focused. There's no need for exposition about the Busted Flush or explaining Meyer's background. MacDonald gets straight to the corrosive central idea—corporate corruption in 'A Flash of Green', or the nightmare of suburban vengeance in 'The Last One Left'. The prose feels denser, more literary in its ambitions. It's like he used the series to pay the bills and the standalones to flex his serious novelist muscles. Both are great, but the one-offs often have a colder, more brilliant edge.

You think I care about titles?” he asked, stepping even closer until I could feel the heat radiating from him. “Do you think that matters to me?”
“It should,” I said, my voice breaking slightly. “It matters to me.”
He tilted his head slightly, studying me. "Why? Why does it matter so much to you?"
“Because,” I said quickly, searching for the right words. “Because people like me... we don’t belong with people like you. You’re... you’re powerful, and I’m—”
“Beautiful,” he cut me off, his voice firm.
I froze, my words dying on my lips. “What?” I whispered.
“You’re beautiful, Sophia,” he said again, his tone softer this time. “And I’m tired of pretending I don’t notice it. You think being a maid defines you, but it doesn’t. Not to me.”
“I reject you.”

Evandra Johnson is the Luna of the Pearl Pack and life is going great.... until it isn't. What she thought was a happy marriage to the love of her life, Jalen, her mate and Alpha, turns to something she doesn't recognize overnight. How did she not see the signs? He chose an Omega over her and now the pack will have a new Luna.
Now she is faced with heartbreak, pain, humiliation, and a new sense of hopelessness. She has no family to turn to, no friends outside of the Pearl Pack and nowhere to go. Staying a lone wolf means she accepts the status of a rogue. But approaching another pack's territory could cost her life.
After her mate's rejection and being banished from her pack, she must figure out her own way. Although she is a trained warrior and has a fierce wolf spirit within her, many dangers await in the forest. She is weakened by the strain of her mate's rejection, making her vulnerable and putting her at great risk.
Can she find herself before her wolf becomes a feral beast she no longer can control, or will she rise above?

Jack Saunders wanted one last hurrah before taking the mantle of DS Oil & Gas, the billion-dollar company that his father founded. His friend, Owen, let him borrow his mansion on a tropical island so that he could throw a final party before “marrying” the business that would dominate the rest of his life. He brought his secretary, Brandy, hoping that he could kindle a relationship that would last through the long days and nights of running a company. However, while the party was great, the gold digging woman he brought was not, and Jack resigned himself to a lifetime of loneliness.
That was until he took a walk down the beach and met her. A woman who didn’t recognize him from the tabloids and only saw him, the man behind the money. Of all the women Jack had ever met, there was nobody like Emma LaRue. With one pretend marriage ceremony, she would change his life forever, and become the only one he ever wanted to give his saltwater kisses to.

I love 'Dress Her in Indigo' for its psychedelic, end-of-the-60s trip to Mexico. It's a time capsule of that era's disillusionment. The mystery is almost secondary to the atmosphere of a culture clash and lost souls.
As a starting point, it's unconventional and moody, but if you're interested in that specific historical moment, it's a fascinating read. It shows the series can be a travelogue of American anxiety.
