Honestly, just follow the numbering on Goodreads or the Ilona Andrews website. The 'Kate Daniels Series' list ends at book 10, 'Magic Triumphs.'
Every other book or series is listed separately. That's the clearest indicator of what the platform and the authors consider the main, core series versus the related works. It's not a perfect system, but for a quick, no-fuss answer, that's where I'd point anyone. The data aggregation reflects the common understanding.

Emotionally, the core series ends when Kate's huge, life-defining conflict with her father is resolved. 'Magic Triumphs' is that ending. Anything after that, even with Kate as the protagonist, is a new story. It's a spin-off in spirit because the central driving tension of the entire world shifts.
So, while 'Magic Tides' is a Kate book, it's a spin-off from her own completed saga. The 'Iron Covenant' and 'Blood Heir' series are spin-offs in the traditional character-focused sense. It all depends on whether you define 'core' by protagonist or by narrative arc.

Honestly, the line gets blurry because Ilona Andrews loves building out their universe. The absolute core is the ten Kate Daniels novels. The spin-offs started with the 'Iron Covenant' series, focusing on Julie Lennart and a new romance, and the 'Wilmington' books, which are more like a sequel series to the main storyline but from a wider perspective.
Even some of the short stories in anthologies, like 'Magic Mourns' from the early days, are part of the core Kate timeline. It's less 'core vs. spin-off' and more 'main Kate POV' versus 'other character POVs in the same world.'

My ebook library is a mess because of this. I have the core ten filed under 'Kate Daniels.' Then I have a separate folder called 'Kate Daniels World' where I put 'Iron and Magic,' the Wilmington books, 'Blood Heir,' and the short story collections. My filing system acknowledges the core as a separate, complete entity, and the rest as a shared universe. It works for me. The core is the folder with exactly ten books in it.

For a practical reading order, everyone says to read the ten core books first. That's non-negotiable. After that, you can read the spin-offs/sequels in any order, though publication order is safe.
So, that's the functional definition: if a resource tells you to read something after the ten-book series, it's not core. The core is the prerequisite for everything else in the universe. That simple rule has never steered me wrong when introducing friends to the series.

For audiobook listeners, the narrator changes after 'Magic Breaks'. Renée Raudman does the first seven, and then Hillary Huber takes over. Both are great, but it's a jarring shift if you're not expecting it. The reading order is the same, just a heads-up on the vocal change. Huber does an amazing job capturing Kate's more mature, settled voice in the later books.
Honestly, just Google 'Kate Daniels reading order Reddit'. There's a famously comprehensive post from a few years back that's been updated to death. It's got color-coding, timeline graphics, links to where you can buy or read the obscure anthology pieces. That thread is the holy grail. No need to reinvent the wheel here.
Don't expect a perfect protagonist. Kate makes mistakes, big ones. She's impulsive, secretive, and her stubbornness causes real problems. But she learns from them. Her flaws make her victories feel deserved. If you like characters who are genuinely challenged and have to grow, you'll appreciate her arc from the very beginning.
The audiobook versions of the shorts are a whole other thing. Some are in the main audiobook anthologies, some are standalone. Trying to get the audio timeline right is a nightmare. I wish the publishers would release a chronological audio collection. I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
