Most summaries will list Leo, Mara, and Arthur, but the character I couldn't stop thinking about was Ben, Leo's older brother who appears in maybe three flashback scenes. He's not 'key' in the plot mechanics sense, but his absence defines Leo's whole personality—the cautiousness, the fear of risk. It's that kind of detail that makes the book feel lived-in. The main three are obviously vital, but the weight of the story comes from these barely-seen ghosts and the quiet, damaging hope that Arthur might finally explain why he disappeared all those years ago.

While there's a pretty sprawling cast in 'Tangled Web', the plot really orbits around three people for me. The first is Leo Vance, who's this frustrated academic historian stumbling through a modern art scandal he never asked to be part of. He’s not your typical lead—more bewildered than heroic, which is why I found him weirdly relatable. Then you’ve got Mara Silvius, the gallery owner whose ambition is as sharp as her taste. She’s the engine of the conflict, but the book does a good job showing her vulnerability, how her curated life is just as fragile as the forgeries she might be selling. The third pillar is Arthur Finch, Leo’s estranged childhood friend turned elusive art authenticator. Their fractured history is the emotional core; every interaction is loaded with things unsaid from twenty years ago.
Beyond that central trio, a few supporting characters genuinely shape the narrative instead of just filling space. Detective Cora Hayes is investigating the fraud, and she brings this weary, procedural clarity that contrasts with the arty, emotional mess of the main characters. There’s also Elara, Leo’s graduate student, who acts as both a sounding board and a dose of youthful pragmatism. Honestly, I kept waiting for a twist with her character that never came, which was maybe the point—she’s just a normal person caught in the crossfire. The antagonist isn’t a single person so much as this pervasive atmosphere of doubt and the ghost of Leo and Arthur’s shared past. The key isn’t just who they are individually, but how their histories and lies knot together until you can’t pull one thread without unraveling someone else.

I saw a copy of 'Tangled Web' at a used bookstore last week and picked it up because the cover looked interesting. After reading the whole thing, I'm almost certain it's a standalone. The plot wraps up completely, and the characters' arcs feel finished, with no lingering threads that scream "sequel bait."
That said, the author does have a few other books set in similar worlds or with a comparable tone, so if you really like their style, you could treat those as a thematic series. But 'Tangled Web' itself tells one complete story. I appreciated that, actually. Sometimes you just want a novel you can finish in a weekend without committing to a whole saga.
I did a quick search online afterwards to confirm, and most fan wikis and the author's own website list it as a single-title release. No numbered entries or direct follow-ups. It's nice to find a solid, self-contained mystery-thriller like this nowadays.
I just finished the paper copy of 'Tangled Web' and immediately went hunting for the audiobook to re-experience it while commuting. Got super frustrated for a while because it wasn't on Audible or Libby through my local library.
Turned out the publisher didn't do a wide release on the big platforms. I eventually found it exclusively on the author's own website—they have a store page where you can buy the MP3 files directly. Bit of an old-school method, but it worked. The narration is actually done by the author themself, which gives it a unique, intimate feel, though the audio quality isn't quite as polished as a studio production.
If that doesn't work for you, try looking on Kobo. Sometimes they have audiobooks that Audible doesn't, due to exclusivity deals. I’ve also seen people mention finding it on AudiobooksNow, but I haven't checked that myself. The search was a bit of a chore, honestly, but having the author read their own work makes the hunt feel worth it in the end.
