Comics and webtoons handle this trope brilliantly, with the visual medium adding a whole layer. The way a morally gray hero is drawn—his expressions, his posture in shadow, the way he's framed in a panel—can convey his internal conflict without a single word of inner monologue.
A single panel showing a slight softening around the eyes when he looks at the heroine, contrasted with a cold, hardened look in the next panel when dealing with an enemy, says volumes. The visual storytelling allows for subtleties that prose sometimes has to spell out. If you're open to graphic storytelling, the fantasy romance manhwa and webcomic world on platforms like Webtoon or Tappytoon is a treasure trove of gorgeously rendered, morally ambiguous love interests.
Sometimes the hero isn't gray in his actions toward others, but in his relationship with himself. He might be a genuinely kind ruler, a fair judge, a protector of the weak. But he harbors a deep self-loathing, a belief that he is fundamentally broken, damned, or unworthy due to his past, his power, or his nature.
His moral struggle is internal. The romance is about the heroine seeing the good man he refuses to see in himself. His arc is about self-acceptance, not moral redemption. He learns to forgive himself, to believe he is deserving of love. This is a quieter, more psychological shade of gray that focuses on internal wounds rather than external actions. It can be incredibly poignant and emotionally satisfying.
Series allow for a deeper exploration of gray morality. In book one, the hero might be firmly in the black—a clear villain or antagonist. Book two begins the process of humanizing him, showing his motivations. By book three, he's a fully realized gray character, and the romance blossoms.
This slow-burn approach across multiple books is incredibly effective. The reader has time to sit with their initial hatred or distrust of the character, then gradually have it chipped away. The shift in perception feels earned, not rushed. We get to be wrong about him, just like the heroine is. By the time he gets his happy ending, we've been on the entire journey from revulsion to understanding to investment. It's the most satisfying kind of character arc.
Remember that 'morally gray' often sits next to 'enemies to lovers' on the bookshelf. The best enemy-to-lover arcs force both characters to confront the fact that their enemy might not be a monster, but someone fighting for a different side with valid reasons. The hero's grayness is revealed as the heroine learns his motivations.
She starts the story seeing him as black (the enemy), learns the gray (his complicated reasons), and maybe by the end accepts him as a shade she can live with. That process of discovery is the heart of the romance. It's not about changing him from black to white; it's about her perception shifting from black to gray. That shift in perspective is, to me, more powerful than any magical redemption arc.

I love when the magical system itself is morally gray, and the hero is just its most adept practitioner. Maybe magic requires sacrifice, or draws from a corruptive source. His mastery comes at a personal cost, staining his soul. The romance becomes a story of whether love can exist in the space left untainted, or if it too will be twisted by the power he wields. It's a brilliant way to bake the moral conflict into the world's fundamental rules, making the hero's nature a symptom of a larger, ambiguous reality.
I'm always hesitant with this trope because sometimes 'morally gray' is just a synonym for 'asshole with a sad backstory.' The real gems are characters who genuinely believe they're doing the right thing, but their methods are horrific. Think of Baru Cormorant from 'The Traitor Baru Cormorant.' She's an accountant trying to bring down an empire from within, and the cost of her calculated, ruthless campaign is everything she loves. You're constantly questioning if the ends justify the means.
I tried the 'Plated Prisoner' series audiobook based on a rec like this. King Midas is... a lot. The narrator does this silky, persuasive, and deeply narcissistic voice for him that is just perfect. He's the grayest of gray—charming, generous, and utterly, toxically possessive. He reframes his control as love so convincingly. Listening to it, you get sucked into the gilded cage alongside the heroine. You understand why she stayed for so long. That's the power of audio; it puts you right inside the manipulation. It's uncomfortable and brilliant.
