I read them as love letters written in the only language Cardan allows himself: the language of schemes and thorns. Every warning is a 'be careful,' every piece of political maneuvering is a 'I made this path safer for you,' every sarcastic remark is a 'I’m still here, notice me.' His feelings are a secret he’s confessing to the parchment, trusting that Jude, of all people, will be clever enough to decipher the true message beneath the courtly poison-pen style.

For a character who acts on whims, the letters represent sustained, deliberate effort. That in itself is a revelation. Cardan’s feelings aren’t a passing fancy or a momentary obsession; they’re significant enough to motivate consistent, long-term action against his own better judgment. He’s investing time, political capital, and emotional energy into a connection that’s all risk and very little obvious reward. That’s the hallmark of something real, messy, and life-altering.

He uses stories and metaphors. Sometimes his points are wrapped in faerie tales or historical anecdotes. This indirect communication shows he’s trying to reach her on a level deeper than plain strategy. He’s speaking in a shared, cultured language, appealing to her intellect and their unique, twisted history. The effort to be understood on this symbolic level reveals a desire for a connection that’s intellectual and instinctual, not just transactional.

They reveal a king who is, paradoxically, making himself subordinate through information. By sharing secrets and counsel, he’s giving Jude power over him. In their world, knowledge is the ultimate currency, and he’s depositing it steadily into her account. That reversal—the puppet master giving the puppet the strings—shows a feeling so deep it’s fundamentally changed his understanding of power. He doesn’t want power over her anymore; he wants a power with her, even if he can’t articulate it.

The letters are his way of continuing their game. Their entire relationship was built on moves and countermoves. Exile didn’t end the game for him; it just changed the board. The letters are his moves. His feelings are tied up in that need to keep playing with her, because the game is the most intimate thing he’s ever known. To stop playing would be to admit it’s over, and he can’t do that.

I've developed a fever all of a sudden. But that's when I hear the thoughts belonging to my Alpha mate, Alder Garrison, whom I've bonded to for five years.
His voice is husky and attractive, and yet the tone he adapts is very unfamiliar to me.
[She's pulling the pity card again. How annoying.]
My breath hitches in my chest as I look up at Alder. He's in the middle of pouring me a glass of water, his gaze seemingly gentle beneath the light.
His lips aren't moving at all, and yet I'm very sure that I heard his voice just now.
When Alder helps me to sit up so that he can feed me the medicine, I purse my lips together before speaking up, albeit hesitantly.
"Alpha Alder, I think I'm hearing things all of a sudden. Can you please accompany me to a healer's station tomorrow?"
Alder is quick to envelope me into a hug and comfort me. "Shh… I'm here. You'll be fine."
But his thoughts sing an entirely different tune.
[Ugh… She's doing it again. Can she stop pestering me already?]
I no longer utter another word. All I feel is my heart slowly going cold in despair.

Aurora's life became a mess, a total mess. Her life was perfect at first. A loving family, a happy home. Her life was simple and perfect. But the arrival of a letter was what caused her whole world to crumble, but in a way, started a new beginning for her.

Her heart was beating loudly in her ears.
Her breath coming out as small sighs. They were so close, noses slightly rubbing.
She couldn't believe what was happening. She had tried to run away from him but she kept falling into his arms. His hazel coloured eyes watched her every move, a charming yet devilish grin plastered on his face. He had his arm over her head.
"Your.."
"Why do you try to run? Have you forgotten that you live under my roof?" He asked. She shivered when he ran his thumb on her cheek.
"Please let me go" She pleaded. She felt light-headed because of his proximity.
"How can I when I'm not even holding you." He asked with a smirk. Her expression pleased him. He leaned towards her ear and whispered;
"You can hide all you want, but you'll always come back to me, both as a king and as a man."
Cercei had spent her entire life serving the MoonStone Pack. She was taught to endure cruelty in silence and bow her head, even when her dignity was torn apart. On the night of the Moon Ball, everything changed. Beneath the silver moon, she fled into the forest and crossed paths with a man whose presence felt dangerous, overwhelming, and strangely familiar.
“You’re shaking,” he said softly.
“I should be afraid of you,” Cercei replied.
Lucian stepped closer, his crimson eyes fixed on hers. “Then why does your scent tell me you’re mine?”
He was Lucian Red, King of the North. Her fated mate.
Before Cercei could face the truth, her father was betrayed and killed, and she was cast out as a rogue. While she suffered in silence, Lucian was trapped by lies and forced into an engagement with a woman who claimed a bond that was never hers.
When fate finally brought them face to face again, Lucian knew at once.
“Remove your mask,” he commanded.
Cercei whispered, “If I do, you’ll never let me go.”
His voice lowered. “I never planned to.”
With kingdoms on the edge of war and secrets soaked in blood, Lucian must claim the woman the world tried to break. And Cercei must decide whether she will remain a servant of fate, or rise as the Luna she was always meant to be.
Chiara Ravensworth is a witch—half Magickal, half Mundane. Divorced but still in love, her parents’ strange balance mirrors Chiara’s own: caught between two realms, searching for where she truly belongs.
Gideon Swan has no memory of his Magickal bloodline. Orphaned, bullied, and fiercely intelligent, he carved out a life in the mundane world posing as a ‘psychic.’ Now filthy rich and famously reclusive, Gideon is haunted by vivid dreams of a woman he’s never met—and by the violent, uncontrolled powers that surge within him, erupting in natural disasters.
He hides from the world to protect it.
Until Chiara appears at his door on a storm-torn evening—and something within him quiets for the first time.
She’s the woman from his dreams.
Bound by an ancient, rare bond—twin flames—their connection is both a gift and a curse. Together, they could become the greatest force for good the world has ever seen… or, as twin flames in history did, they destroy each other in the fire of their own making.
While in the shadows, something dark and patient waits. It needs only one thing to rise: their union, so it could harness that flame for itself.
The concept of 'deserve.' Jude believes she must earn everything, that she deserves nothing by birthright. Cardan, born with everything, feels he deserves nothing because he never earned it. His letters reveal a profound sense of illegitimacy. His attraction to her is partly because she embodies the 'earning' he feels he lacks. Her struggle justifies her existence in a way his privileged birth never could for him.
They keep the conflict alive. Without the letters, Jude's exile could have become a clean break. The letters are the pinpricks that prevent the wound from healing. They're a constant, low-grade irritation and fascination. Their entire relationship is built on a foundation of conflict, so the romance, when it comes, has to grow from that same soil. The letters ensure the soil stays fertile by regularly turning it over.
The letters are woven throughout 'The Queen of Nothing' and 'How the King of Elfhame Learned to Hate Stories.' Honestly, reading them in isolation loses so much impact.
Each one arrives at a crucial emotional beat in Jude's journey. Getting them via a list strips away the context of what she's facing when she receives them.
I'd strongly recommend just rereading the final book and the companion novella. The pacing and reveals are part of the experience. The anticipation between chapters is part of the fun.
You miss the gut-punch of finding one when Jude is at her lowest, or the hope it sparks. They're narrative devices, not just collectibles.
