After reading through these replies, I'm realizing we're all describing workarounds, not solutions. That's probably the most telling answer of all. The perfect app that caters specifically to light novel fans wanting both formats doesn't exist in a meaningful way yet.

We're all making do with the generic tools provided by big corporations (Amazon, Google, Apple) or using multiple niche apps. Someone should really start a kickstarter for this idea; I bet it would get funded.

It's a technical hurdle too. Ebook apps are optimized for rendering text and images with low battery use. Audiobook apps need to handle background playback, download management for large files, and playback controls. Merging those into one app without it becoming a bloated, buggy mess is harder than it sounds.

Smaller publishers building LN apps probably don't have the resources to develop a robust audio player. Big tech companies that have great audio players (like Apple) don't care enough about the LN niche to curate the content specifically for that audience. We're stuck in the middle.

Hmm, good question. I'm not actually sure myself. I mostly just read the text versions on my tablet. Maybe someone else in the thread has a better lead on this? I'd be interested to know if there's a convenient all-in-one solution out there.

The more I think about it, the more it seems like a missed opportunity for a company like Crunchyroll. They have the anime, they have the manga app. If they added light novel ebooks and audiobooks to their subscription? That would be a killer all-in-one anime media hub.

They could even bundle the audio as a premium tier. But for now, they're not doing it. Maybe the licensing between publishers is too complex, or the user base isn't demanding it loudly enough. We should all start tweeting at them.

Which free light novel app offers both text and audio versions?

Webnovel’s free tier sometimes includes promo codes for audiobook chapters of certain popular series, but it's inconsistent and you have to hunt for them. I snagged a few for 'Second Life Ranker' that way. Honestly, the truly robust text-and-audio combos are locked behind subscription services like BookBeat or premium platforms. For completely free stuff, you're better off separating your needs: use a free reading app for text and then check YouTube or podcast apps for unofficial fan-dub audiobooks of public domain or webnovels. It’s a patchwork solution, but it works in a pinch.

Which light novel platforms provide both ebooks and audiobooks together?

This feels like the next frontier, right? We have streaming for anime, digital for manga and novels, but a cohesive audio+text platform for light novels doesn't exist yet. Publishers are testing waters. I know Yen Audio is pushing out audiobooks for series like 'Mushoku Tensei' and 'The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy'. They're on Audible. But to get both, you'd buy the ebook from your preferred retailer (Apple Books, Google Play, Kindle) and the audio from Audible. No joint subscription or bundle I'm aware of. It's a hassle, and I wish a service like Scribd would just license the whole package.

What free novel reading app supports both ebooks and audiobooks?

Spotify has entered the chat for audiobooks, but their free tier is limited to 15 hours per month for audiobooks, I think? And you'd still need a separate app for ebooks. So not a unified solution. Honestly, the lack of a perfect, singular app is probably due to licensing costs. Producing or licensing an audiobook is expensive, so companies aren't rushing to give away that and the ebook in one bundled, free package. The library apps work because libraries pay for those licenses upfront. That's why they're the only game in town for this specific, totally free combo.

I think a big part of this depends on what you mean by 'novels.' If you're looking for the latest big-name thriller or romance, your free options are limited mostly to library waits. If you're happy with classics, mysteries, or a lot of indie genre fiction, your world opens up tremendously with Project Gutenberg, Librivox, and library apps. The app itself becomes less important than the content pipeline.
