Look at the acknowledgments sections of debut novels you admire. Authors always thank their agents there. It's a direct line to someone who successfully guided a debut through the process. I made a spreadsheet from books published in the last two years that felt similar to mine. Compiled about twenty names and started querying from there. That method feels more targeted than just cold-emailing big agencies.

Finding someone who actually gets debut work is like hitting the jackpot. I had no luck with the big names everyone suggests; they're swamped. The agent who finally picked up my manuscript was a newer agent at a solid agency, building her own list. She had the backing but also the time to actually work with me.
Places like The Bent Agency have a few agents known for nurturing first-timers. Someone like Victoria Cappello comes to mind—she’s actively looking and has a track record with debuts in upmarket and book club fiction. Don’t just chase the top-tier agents from the start. Sometimes the newer or junior agents at established places are hungrier and more editorial, which you need when you’re starting out. My edits were brutal but necessary.

Honestly, I think focusing on 'who specializes in debuts' is slightly missing the point. Most reputable agents take on debut authors if the project is right for them. The real filter should be who specializes in your genre. An agent who loves fantasy but rarely sells literary fiction won't be helpful just because they've done a debut.
Check recent deals on Publishers Marketplace. Search for 'nice deal' or 'good deal' in your category and see which agents are making those sales for first-time novelists. That list is way more valuable than any general recommendation. It’s how I found my agent—saw she’d just sold two debut thrillers in a six-month span.

This author once failed as a heroine… and returned as something entirely different.
Not as a savior.
But as the villain.
And she didn’t come back empty-handed.
She brought secrets.
She brought sins.
She brought a story that was never meant to be read.
Sinners & Saints is not just a collection of dark romance stories—
It is a confession.
A warning.
And a door best left unopened.
Within these pages lie twisted love stories where desire and destruction walk hand in hand, and every choice comes with a cost.
So the question is simple:
Will you turn away…
or step inside anyway?
"Custom demanded that Prince Urban get a love mark tattooed to the side of his left eye as an infant, just like the rest of his people, but to him, the stupid things have only brought on the scorn of his father, the misery of his siblings, and caused his entire kingdom to go broke from fighting so many wars over the irritating ink stains.
When Urban’s sister must travel to Donnelly, the kingdom within the sand, for her arranged marriage to align two realms, he goes with her. But he no sooner steps foot inside their castle than his mark starts itching like a son of a bitch, telling him his one true love is near.
It just figures, though, that the woman meant for him is completely forbidden. Now he must decide if he should ignore the persistent mark, telling him she's the one, in order to avoid a possible war between kingdoms, or if he should discover whether she's worth risking everything for so they can be together. Either way, his life gets sucked into chaos with threats of beheadings, dark magic lurking, castle traitors scheming, and sword fights eminent.
Who knew one little tattoo could cause so much trouble?
(ONE TRUE LOVE is the author’s first attempt at a fantasy romance. Please forgive her; she might’ve read an overabundance of Cassandra Gannon, Sarah J. Maas, and Eve Langlais books, then gone off to watch too many episodes of Supernatural, Game of Thrones, and Outlander, because this was the outcome.)"
"After witnessing his parents’ doomed love affair, serial playboy Ash Younger decided long ago that love was not meant for him. With his charm and good looks, he’s never lacked for beautiful women. He may push numbers as an accountant by day, but by night, he’s only interested in having a woman in his bed.
Yet the night he encounters a mysterious—and gorgeous—widow who doesn’t immediately fall under his seductive spell, Ash realizes he wants her more than he’s ever wanted another woman.
Following the loss of her husband two years ago, Violet Fielding wants to focus on two things: her jewelry business and beginning her life anew in the small town of Fair Haven, Washington. She doesn’t have time for men or romance, and she certainly doesn’t have time for a man who’s a well-known playboy and younger than her.
Violet already found the love of her life in her husband, and after his death, she knew she could never love anyone again.
But when Ash kisses her, all of her plans and promises are turned upside down. A passion stronger than either Ash or Violet could imagine envelops them both one night—and that night changes everything.
As old heartbreaks threaten to tear the couple apart, both must find the courage to see that, of all things, love is worth a second chance."
"She's his enemy, his downfall—and his one last chance at love.
After Adam Danvers lost his wife in a tragic accident, he stopped believing in love. Instead, Adam has focused solely on running his family’s struggling vineyard in the small town of Heron’s Landing.
When Joy McGuire, a beautiful and clever journalist, moves to the sleepy town, suddenly Adam can’t control his intense attraction to her. She’s witty; she pushes his buttons. He wants to shake her as much as he wants to kiss her.
But Joy is a journalist, and Adam hates them all on principle. He saw firsthand how a journalist’s lies destroyed his late wife. Yet as Joy proves that she’s nothing like the writers he’s known, Adam can’t help but give in to exquisite temptation.
Soon a conflagration ignites between Adam and Joy. Yet as secrets unfold, Adam must trust in love or lose the woman who’s awakened his slumbering heart.

The day I received my admission to the New York Bar, I finally confessed my feelings to Alex Walker, the man who had been my mentor for the past three years.
He was crouched down, carefully fastening the strap of Claire Harrison's designer heel. Claire was the heiress and CEO of a rival firm.
When he heard my confession, he stood up and looked at me with nothing but contempt.
"Eileen, who do you think you are? You think you deserve to marry into my family? You're just an assistant from some backwater town who happened to pass the bar. Do you really believe that makes you worthy of standing beside me?"
Before I could react, he slipped a stack of forged trade secret documents into my handbag.
Then he handed me over to Lucas Morrison, the infamous heir to the Morrisons, a man whose ruthless reputation was well known throughout New York's elite.
"Mr. Morrison, she's all yours. Make her take the fall for the leaked documents. And while you're at it, teach her to stay in her lane. I've already chosen Claire. I have no use for this one anymore. Do whatever you want with her."
His men dragged me away. Alex never looked back.
One month later, Walker Law Firm was collapsing under a flood of scandals—fabricated financial records, misappropriated client funds, and malicious lawsuits.
Alex finally called me, his voice as arrogant as ever.
"Have you suffered enough? Admit those fake accounts and lawsuit files were your doing, and I might consider letting you come back as my assistant."
Before I could answer, Lucas let out a low, amused laugh from beside me.
"Mr. Walker," he said lazily, "my wife is busy acquiring your law firm. She doesn't have time to be anyone's scapegoat."
Honestly, sometimes I think they just close their eyes and point. The whole process seems to have so many variables it's a miracle any books get published at all.
Submission guidelines are everything. I spent weeks polishing a query for an agent, only to realize I’d formatted the entire thing wrong for their specific online portal. Felt like a massive waste of time. Now I have a brutal checklist: one-inch margins, Times New Roman, double-spaced, word count in the header. Sounds basic, but you’d be surprised how many manuscripts look sloppy before a single word is read.
Beyond that, the synopsis is its own special hell. Condensing 90,000 words into one gripping page? I’ve rewritten mine maybe twenty times. My biggest lesson was to focus on the core emotional arc, not every subplot. The sample chapters need to hook instantly—those first five pages are under a microscope. It’s a grueling process, honestly, but getting those technicalities perfect at least means your writing gets a fair shot.
Forget finding an ‘open’ agent for a second. First, find the right agency. Many mid-sized to larger agencies have a ‘submissions’ email that funnels to junior agents or assistants who are actively building their lists. They’re hungry. Research the agency’s overall client list—do you like the books they publish? If so, submitting through their general portal can be a great backdoor. An assistant might read your query, love it, and champion it internally. This is especially true for agencies known for a particular genre strength, like a powerhouse in commercial thriller or literary fiction.
