They stop being just 'suspects' and start being full protagonists in their own right within the story. The book might spend equal time on the suspect's daily struggles, their dreams, their fears, before the murder even happens. When they become a person of interest, we're already invested. We're not just wondering if they did it; we're terrified they might have, or desperately hoping they didn't. The freshness is emotional, not mechanical.

Lol, my strategy is to take long breaks between books in a series. By the time I come back, I've forgotten the formula, and it all feels fresh again! Maybe the real trick is reader amnesia.

The detective's declining skills or changing morality. An aging detective might misread a suspect due to outdated assumptions. A detective who has become jaded might be too quick to condemn a certain type of person. Their flaw becomes a filter that distorts the suspect pool. Freshness comes from the reader seeing the clues more clearly than the detective, or worrying about their bias. The suspect is seen through a cracked lens, which makes the viewing experience new.

How do murder mystery series handle recurring detectives over time?

The sheer volume of trauma becomes absurd. If a real person solved that many violent murders, they'd be a non-functional shell. So series either ignore the cumulative effect (the 'cabot cove' model) or make the trauma itself the defining characteristic (the 'brooding hero' model). A rare few manage a middle path, showing a person who has learned to compartmentalize in unhealthy but functional ways, with the cracks showing only at the edges. That's the most believable path for me.
