Which Longmire Book Comes First And How Does The Series Progress
Huge Longmire fan here after the Netflix adaptation and totally mixed up where Sheriff Walt Longmire's first case in the Wyoming novels starts. For newcomers, what's the official order for the Walt Longmire mystery series?

I see a lot of correct info here about 'The Cold Dish' being first. One angle folks don't mention enough is the audiobooks. George Guidall narrates, and his voice is Walt Longmire. If you're an audio listener, starting with book one in audio format is an incredible experience. The series progresses with Guidall's steady, weathered tone perfectly capturing the pace of Wyoming and Walt's inner monologue. Listening in order lets you appreciate how Guidall embodies each character's growth over decades. It's one of those rare adaptations where the narration feels inseparable from the prose. Just another way to enjoy the journey from that first murder in 'The Cold Dish' to the latest installment.

It's refreshing to see a series where the protagonist isn't a dysfunctional mess. Walt Longmire in 'The Cold Dish' is grieving but fundamentally healthy and competent. The series progresses by challenging that health—physically and emotionally—but never breaking his core decency. He's not an alcoholic, he's not a womanizer, he's not a brooding genius. He's a good man trying to do a good job. That might sound boring, but in Johnson's hands, it's profoundly compelling. Watching that goodness get tested, weathered, and ultimately reaffirmed across two dozen books is a uniquely uplifting experience. Start at the start to see that goodness in its pure, undiluted form.

I love threads like this. Makes me want to go back and re-read 'The Cold Dish' tonight. Remembering that opening scene with the deer and the snow... chills. It's all there from page one.

Confession: I read 'The Cold Dish' after seeing a few seasons of the show, and I was shocked by how different the tone was. The book is funnier, sadder, and more philosophical. The series in print progresses as a first-person narrative, so you're glued to Walt's thoughts. His wry, weary humor is constant. The show made him more of a silent stoic. Book Walt is a reader, a thinker, a man who quotes poetry. That's the progression I love—each book adds another layer to his interior life. The mysteries are puzzles, but the real hook is spending time in this man's company as he navigates loss, duty, and aging. Start at page one of book one to meet him properly.

The relationship with the Cheyenne Nation and Henry Standing Bear is the soul of the series. 'The Cold Dish' establishes their bond with economy and power. It's not explained through exposition; it's shown through action and silent understanding. The series progresses by deepening this cross-cultural friendship in ways that are never simplistic. Henry is not a 'magical Native American' trope; he's a complex, flawed, fiercely loyal friend. Their dialogue is some of the best in crime fiction. Skipping 'The Cold Dish' would be like missing the first chapter of that lifelong friendship. All the nuances, jokes, and unspoken debts that develop later stem from that foundational book.

I think the most successful changes the show made were the ones that served the ensemble. Giving Vic, Henry, Ferg, and Ruby more to do, more backstory, more interplay, made for better television. A strict first-person adaptation would have left them as shadows.
By breaking out of Walt's head, the show enriched the world, even if it took liberties with the source material. The book series order is a solo journey with companions. The TV series order is a group adventure. Which you prefer depends on whether you want to live inside Walt's mind or hang out with all of them in the Absaroka County Sheriff's Department.
The mysteries are good, but the real draw is Walt's moral compass. It's tested in different ways in each book, and the consequences sometimes ripple into later stories. A decision in 'Death Without Company' might be referenced in 'Junkyard Dogs'. That continuity rewards the ordered read.
