As a guy who primarily reads thrillers, getting into romance felt awkward until I treated it like any other genre hunt. I started with romance subgenres that aligned with my existing interests—military romance for the action and strategy, or paranormal romance for the supernatural stakes. That way, the external plot (a mission, a magical war) provided a familiar structure, and the romantic elements enhanced it rather than being the sole focus. Authors like Ilona Andrews do this brilliantly; their 'Kate Daniels' series is a urban fantasy with a core romance that grows over many books, surrounded by fantastic world-ending plots.
It's a gateway that doesn't sacrifice either element.
Look at the protagonist's occupation. A knight, a detective, a spy, a surgeon, a wizard—these jobs come with inherent plot generators (missions, cases, spells). Their professional challenges will drive the narrative. The romance develops as they navigate their demanding lives. A protagonist with a vague or passive job might rely more on internal or relational conflict for the plot. Occupation is a quick shorthand for potential plot engines built into the character's daily life.
Sometimes, the best balance comes from a story that doesn't market itself as a romance at all. Literary fiction with a strong romantic element, like 'The Song of Achilles' or 'The Great Gatsby,' has the plot and thematic depth as the primary driver, with a passionate, often tragic, relationship at its heart. You get incredible prose and layered storytelling, and the romantic passion is woven into the fabric of the tale. It's a different kind of satisfaction, where the relationship feels monumental because of its consequences within a larger narrative.
Think about the physical book's design. This is superficial, but sometimes a cover with symbolic imagery (a key, a sword, a particular flower with meaning in the story) rather than just a couple embracing can hint at a thematic or plot-heavy focus. The cover art is a marketing decision meant to signal the book's content to its target audience. A more abstract or symbolic cover might be trying to attract readers who want more than just a romance novel.

I’ll be the weirdo and recommend 'This Is How You Lose the Time War' by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone. It’s a sapphic romance between rival time-traveling agents, but the writing is so visceral, poetic, and packed with action-intellect that it transcends any single genre label. It’s a love story built on coded messages and universe-altering stakes.
Romance novels men favor often lean towards action-packed plots with a romantic subplot rather than the other way around. I've noticed male readers gravitate towards books like 'The Dresden Files' by Jim Butcher, where the protagonist's romantic entanglements are secondary to the supernatural detective work. These stories usually feature a strong, often brooding male lead who balances love with duty or adventure. The emotional depth is there, but it's woven into a larger, more adrenaline-fueled narrative.
On the flip side, romance novels women favor tend to focus intensely on emotional connection and personal growth. Books like 'The Hating Game' by Sally Thorne or 'The Notebook' by Nicholas Sparks dive deep into the characters' inner worlds, exploring vulnerabilities and relationships in exquisite detail. Women often enjoy slow burns, enemies-to-lovers tropes, and rich emotional landscapes. The stakes are more about heart than heroics, though there's plenty of crossover appeal in genres like paranormal romance.
The handling of conflict resolution is a big one. Couples who argue constantly about the same thing or who break up over a simple conversation that never happens can be frustrating. Engaging conflict arises from core differences in values, goals, or traumatic pasts.
The resolution should require compromise, growth, and communication from both parties. Seeing the male protagonist actively work to understand his partner's perspective, admit his own faults, and change his behavior is a powerful and satisfying arc. It models a healthy approach to relationship problems, which is more rewarding to read than a relationship saved by a grand, external gesture.
Pay attention to the publishing imprint or indie author's brand. Some imprints or authors are known for a certain tone. For example, some specialize in 'sweet' or 'clean' romances where physical intimacy is behind closed doors and the focus is purely emotional. Others are known for dark, morally gray characters. Reading the author's bio or website can give clues. Many indie authors are very transparent about their stories featuring neurodiverse characters, ethical non-monogamy, or other value-driven themes. Their reader communities often form around those shared interests.
