I view them as key chapters published out of sequence. If you assembled the 'Murderbot Diaries' as one gigantic novel, you'd insert 'Compulsory' as a chapter between what are now books 1 and 2. You'd insert 'Home' as a chapter between books 4 and 5. They aren't standalone; they're integral parts of the whole narrative body. Their publication as shorts was likely a marketing or publishing logistics decision, not an artistic one suggesting they're ancillary. Treat them as part of the main text.
