No! 'The Housemaid Is Watching' is NOT a direct sequel to my earlier novel of domestic manners and mad secrets. Rather it is rather rather like an Anthology style season of TV – same writer, similar central concerns but a totally new set of characters, a fresh ‘housemaid’ and an entirely new set of illusions which will tumble. The stories are NOT interconnected in terms of plot and characters. Rather there is a subtle connection between them in terms of overall ‘tone’ and genre. Thus, if you like one of my novels about the lives of thelower middle class and their servants then I think you will enjoy the others but there is NO necessity to read them in order to understand them. Rather it will be more a case of which novel’s synopsis actually grabs you the most?

A purely analytical look at both books reveals mirror like narrative structures. Both books are told in three acts with secrets being revealed to the reader along the way. However, the secrets, character development, and resolution of each book are entirely unique to themselves. Therefore, analyzing one book does not give the reader any kind of advantage in predicting the plot of the other book even if read first. Rather than preparing the reader’s brain to read the other book, each book gives the reader a completely different puzzle to solve. The book is a spiritual sequel, not a literal one. The “sinister dealings in fancy houses” are the same “spirit” behind both the letter and the book. Two completely different sets of characters and crimes. I can get in touch with that spirit through either book. The spirit is more polished and sly in the second book, but that’s just my opinion. The doorway to this type of creepy, suspenseful feeling is not guarded. You don’t need to have read the first book to unlock the second. Both doors open directly into their own unique fully furnished nightmares. Find the one with the more appealing (or ominous) porch light and enter in there.
