Yes, The Housemaid Is Watching is a sequel to the first book The Housemaid and must be read first in order to understand the continued development of the characters and the story. The drama between a wealthy employer and a member of his staff is intense in The Housemaid Is Watching, and if you enjoy this then you may also enjoy Domineering Billionaire’s Maid. This book develops a similar power imbalance between a wealthy billionaire employer and a female staff member and follows their increasingly intense and dramatic conflicts and secrets as they are exposed within his plush estate.

If you are deciding whether to read The Housemaid before The Housemaid Is Watching rest assured that you can start with this sequel. The Housemaid Is Watching is a completely new and fresh storyline with totally new characters. The story is full of suspense and is full of twist and turns which will keep you on the edge of your seat. Even if you were to read the first book by this author, it would give you some extra background to the whole series, but that is not necessary to enjoy The Housemaid Is Watching. It will be a great read for fans of the first book and also for new readers to this author.

Analytically speaking, The Housemaid Is Watching is a standalone novel. However, because The Housemaid sets up the emotional/psychological landscape that The Housemaid Is Watching further explores, reading The Housemaid first can provide much insight into the sequel, particularly with regards to the themes of trust, betrayal and domestic suspense and their corresponding character development. But because The Housemaid Is Watching is a complex novel with layered storytelling and fully developed characters, readers of this type of novel may find that starting with The Housemaid creates a more rich reading experience.

While The Housemaid Is Watching can be read as a completely standalone novel, there are definitely enough references to the characters from The Housemaid as well as their relationships with each other that a prior reading of the novel would be beneficial. Reading the first novel in the series would allow readers to get a better understanding of many of the psychological ideas as well as motivations of the characters that are central to The Housemaid Is Watching. The novel is perfect for new readers to The Housemaid, as it is bursting with many twists and suspense. For those readers that have read The Housemaid, they will be able to delve deeper into the various themes and appreciate the added nuances and connections to the first novel in the series.

No! 'The Housemaid Is Watching' is NOT a direct sequel to my earlier novel of domestic manners and mad secrets. Rather it is rather rather like an Anthology style season of TV – same writer, similar central concerns but a totally new set of characters, a fresh ‘housemaid’ and an entirely new set of illusions which will tumble. The stories are NOT interconnected in terms of plot and characters. Rather there is a subtle connection between them in terms of overall ‘tone’ and genre. Thus, if you like one of my novels about the lives of thelower middle class and their servants then I think you will enjoy the others but there is NO necessity to read them in order to understand them. Rather it will be more a case of which novel’s synopsis actually grabs you the most?
