If you wanted to believe the ruthless mafia boss was secretly soft, that reveals his motivation might be about projecting a specific image, not just about power. It's a more intuitive, feelings-first way into their psyche.

One question that always sparks wild debate in our group is about the biggest lie a character tells themselves. Not the fibs they spin for others, but the internal story they cling to. I'm thinking of a fantasy series where the heroine believed she was protecting her family by staying quiet, but really, she was terrified of her own power. Discussing that forced us to pick apart every one of her earlier choices—that 'noble' sacrifice looked a lot more like cowardice in hindsight.
