Does anyone else find that the best horror now often comes from authors who primarily write in other genres? Like, a literary fiction writer decides to write a horror novel, and they bring a completely different toolkit—a focus on character interiority, lyrical prose, structural experimentation. They aren't bound by genre conventions, so they break them without even trying. Their horror feels accidental, organic, and therefore more insidious. It sneaks up on you because you weren't expecting it from that author.
I think we're in a golden age of horror short story collections. Single-author collections allow writers to experiment with tone, concept, and style without the commitment of a novel. They can deliver a knockout punch of terror in twenty pages and then move on. Collections by people like Brian Evenson, Kelly Link, or Mariana Enríquez are like tasting menus of fear. You get a little bit of everything, and it's a great way to discover what specific kind of horror really gets under your skin. The form itself encourages innovation.
I feel like the big shift is toward ambiguity. The old-school stories often explained the monster, gave it rules, and provided a resolution. A lot of modern horror I'm enjoying refuses to do that. The horror might be a phenomenon, a place, a sound that defies explanation. 'The Haar' by David Sodergren is a wild ride that starts with a sea mist and just gets weirder from there, never fully answering 'why.' That lingering mystery, the inability to categorize or understand the threat, feels very modern and deeply unsettling in our age of information overload.

I keep a list on my phone! Let me pull it up... Okay, for modern supernatural scares that feel different, I'd add 'The Children of Red Peak' by Craig DiLouie. It's about survivors of a religious doomsday cult, dealing with trauma and the possibly supernatural thing they witnessed. The horror is in the memory, the doubt, the survivor's guilt. Is the terror inside them, or did they really witness a god? That ambiguity, tied to the very real horror of cult psychology, feels like a new blend. It's less about the event and more about the lifelong haunting of it.
The fear of being replaced or erased is huge in the digital age. 'The Return' by Rachel Harrison is about a woman whose friend comes back after vanishing for two years, but she's... off. The horror is in the slow-burn suspicion, the uncanny valley of a person you love changing in imperceptible ways. It redefines the doppelgänger or changeling myth for a time of social media personas and the anxiety that people can become strangers.
