I'm just here to upvote every mention of Eve Dallas. That's it. That's the comment. Carry on.

It’s worth noting that 'strong' doesn't mean 'emotionally cold'. Roberts's heroines feel deeply. They grieve, they fear, they love passionately. Eve Dallas is famously emotionally stunted due to her childhood, but her journey is about slowly opening up without becoming weak. That balance is hard to strike, and I think it’s why her characters resonate across such a wide audience. They’re aspirational in their capability but relatable in their emotional struggles.

Are we talking 'strong' as in physically tough, or emotionally resilient, or just fiercely independent? Because Roberts nails all those types. A sleeper pick is 'Angels Fall'—a chef fleeing her past who stumbles into a murder mystery in the middle of nowhere. Her strength is in her paranoia and determination to be believed, which is a different, more psychological kind of grit. The leads in 'Carolina Moon' and 'Montana Sky' also come to mind; they're survivors of trauma who actively reclaim their lives and communities. Roberts rarely writes a passive heroine waiting to be saved, which is probably why she's so consistently popular.

Waiting to see if anyone brings up a specific title I haven't read yet. My to-read pile is already huge, but I can always make room for a Nora Roberts book with a killer lead.

Let’s not forget the 'In Death' series, which is a beast of its own. Eve Dallas is the ultimate growth character. She starts as a brash, emotionally damaged cop and, over 50+ books, evolves into a leader, a wife, a friend, and a mentor, without ever losing her essential grit. The praise for her isn't just about being strong in one book; it's about the decades-long arc of a woman healing and thriving while staying true to her relentless sense of justice. That’s a different kind of writing strength right there.

Madeleine Júlia Cordeiro lives in a quiet, plant-filled apartment in the rougher part of Chicago. She’s twenty-one, broke, vegan, and studying animal science at the local community college. She cries over rescue dogs, talks to her plants like they’re her best friends, and thinks violence is something that only happens in action movies. Her life is calm, predictable, and painfully ordinary.
Until he bleeds all over her floor.
Adriano Capone is violence in human form—shot, hunted, and very much the kind of man her sweet little heart should run from. He’s everything she hates: violent, dangerous, cruel in the way only a mafia prince can be.
He’s everything she’s sworn to avoid but he's hurt and Maddie has a soft spot for lost things.
So, she stitches him up.
And he stitches himself into her life.
He's the devil incarnate.
She's never even slapped someone.
But fate doesn't care about perfect matches...
It threw fire into the hands of a flower girl.

Kate Taylor spent seven years being the perfect wife. She gave up her dreams of becoming a celebrated chef, abandoned her culinary career, and molded herself into exactly what her husband David wanted—quiet, obedient, and invisible.
When she finally decided to get her life together, he refused. She got tired of the humiliation after he refused her from taking an offer as a chef.
Kate files for divorce and returns to the only thing that ever made her feel alive—cooking. She takes the job at Morrison's, the most prestigious restaurant in New York, under Chef Henri Laurent and his son Alex. Her talent explodes back to life. Critics rave about her dishes and her name starts trending. She's finally remembering who she was before David made her forget.
But David won't let her go without a fight. He weaponizes their children against her, turns their son Theo against her, threatens her career, and parades Sarah around like she's already his wife. He wants to destroy everything Kate is building.
Then she finds out a secret David had been hiding for six years, Sarah was more than his secretary.
As custody battles turn vicious, family secrets surface, and old enemies join forces, Kate must decide: will she let the past control her future, or will she finally claim the empire she deserves?

Sora Robbins has spent years trapped in a painful marriage where her husband Melvin publicly shames her generous curves while privately using her body. When Melvin is presumed dead in a tragic accident, Sora’s guarded heart begins to open to two very different men who offer her something she has never known: genuine emotional care mixed with intense desire. Her dominant billionaire boss Jack Blackwood provides passionate protection and sees her strength, while her best friend’s gentle yet intense crippled brother George Harrison offers tender understanding and quiet devotion.
As Sora starts healing and discovering her own power, Melvin returns alive but changed after two years of recovery under the obsessive care of Cassie Brown. What begins as individual connections erupts into a ruthless war among four dangerous men who will lie, betray, and kill to claim Sora completely. With family inheritance battles, corporate enemies, and dark secrets threatening everything, Sora must navigate jealousy, obsession, and her growing feelings while transforming from a broken, insecure woman into the confident, worshipped queen at the center of a dark reverse harem.
Nora Roberts has this magical way of crafting heroines who feel like they could leap off the page and solve all their problems with a witty remark and a stubborn streak. One of my absolute favorites is 'Jewels of the Sun'. Aidan Gallagher is a dreamy pub owner, but Jude Murray—the heroine—steals the show. She’s this quiet, bookish woman who reinvents herself in Ireland, and her growth from timid to fiercely independent is so satisfying. The way Roberts writes her emotional journey, intertwined with Irish folklore, makes it unforgettable.
Then there’s 'Birthright', where Callie Dunbrook is an archaeologist who doesn’t take nonsense from anyone. She’s sharp, driven, and unapologetically passionate about her work. The mystery plot adds layers to her character, and her chemistry with the male lead is electric. Roberts’ heroines aren’t just strong; they’re layered, flawed, and utterly human. It’s why I keep coming back to her books—they feel like reunions with old friends.
Her holiday novels, like 'The Perfect Hope' (from the Inn trilogy) or 'The Gift', often double down on family themes. The seasonal setting naturally emphasizes togetherness, tradition, and home. These books spotlight how families navigate the heightened emotions and expectations of the holidays, often leading to reconciliation or deepened bonds.
They can be a great entry point for readers specifically looking for that warm, family-centric feeling. The conflicts tend to be more interpersonal than life-threatening, focusing on healing old rifts or blending new family members during a symbolic time of year. The romance feels like part of a larger celebration of connection.
While sometimes lighter, they still feature her signature focus on family as the ultimate source of strength and joy.
