I wonder how e-book and audiobook sales factor into these totals nowadays. Are they counted? If so, that could give newer books a boost, as digital sales are tracked precisely. But 'And Then There Were None' is so old that its digital sales are just a fraction of its lifetime physical sales. The record is probably safe for a long, long time.
It's a record built in the analog age, through sheer volume of paperbacks printed, shipped, and sold in bookstores, newsstands, and airports around the world. That kind of physical ubiquity is harder to achieve today with so many entertainment options. It's a relic of a different era of publishing, which makes the record even more untouchable. It's like a sports record set before modern training methods—it just stands apart.

Let's not forget the power of adaptations. 'And Then There Were None' has been adapted into films, TV miniseries, radio plays, stage plays, and even a video game. Every new adaptation introduces the story to a new audience and drives a surge of book sales. The 2015 BBC miniseries, for instance, was hugely popular and undoubtedly put the novel back on bestseller lists.
This cyclical relationship between book and adaptation is a huge engine for sustained sales. It's not a book that had one big moment and faded; it's constantly being rediscovered through new media. That's a key factor in maintaining those record-breaking numbers over such a long period. It's a cultural touchstone that keeps getting renewed.

Honestly, I'm more impressed by the sales of the series of books featuring Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple. The collective sales of those characters are in the billions. That's a fandom, a sustained universe that people return to for dozens of books. 'And Then There Were None' is a brilliant one-off, but Christie's true commercial empire was built on her recurring detectives who became like old friends to readers.
So while this one book holds the singular record, her real achievement is the lifetime body of work and the creation of iconic characters that have endured for a century. The record is a shiny trophy, but the true legacy is the library of stories that continue to give joy and chills to millions around the world. She's the queen of mystery for a reason.

Does anyone else find the premise kind of terrifying in a very existential way? It's not just a murder mystery; it's about ten people being accused of past crimes that the law couldn't touch, and then being executed by an unseen force. It plays on a deep-seated fear of cosmic justice, of being held accountable for your secret sins. That thematic weight, I think, is what elevates it above a simple puzzle.
It's a horror story as much as a mystery. The growing paranoia, the shrinking group, the inability to escape the island—it's a primal nightmare scenario. That emotional resonance, coupled with the intellectual puzzle, creates a uniquely powerful experience. It's not just 'who did it?' but 'what would I do in that situation?' That question haunts readers long after they finish the last page.

The day before Simon Miles and I were set to get engaged, he told me his true love was his childhood sweetheart.
He secretly booked plane tickets for himself and her to travel abroad.
For eight years, I would spend one day each year at the Capital Hotel. That was where my engagement to Simon was supposed to happen.
Everyone thought I could not move on from him.
Eight years later, he returned to the country with his childhood sweetheart for his career.
He had learned that a tycoon’s mother, Laurel Windsor, loved dining at the Capital Hotel, so he immediately bought her a gift to curry favor.
The moment he handed Laurel the gift, he saw me standing beside her.
He frowned and snapped. “It’s been eight years, Clara. Why are you still clinging to me? You knew I was coming back, so you rushed over, didn’t you?
“Listen here. I’m back for business. If you ruin this deal for me, I’ll make you pay!”
I was baffled.
Oh, so he still did not know why I was here.
Laurel was my mother-in-law, and it was her birthday today.
Every year, I would dine with her at the Capital Hotel for her birthday.

I'm waiting to see if anyone here has actually read all of the top 10. That would be a serious reading achievement. I might make it a life goal, honestly. Knocking off 'Don Quixote', 'A Tale of Two Cities', 'The Lord of the Rings', 'The Little Prince', 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone', 'And Then There Were None', 'The Dream of the Red Chamber', 'The Hobbit', 'She: A History of Adventure', and 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe'. That's a wildly diverse reading list spanning centuries and cultures. You'd get a fantastic education in global storytelling just from those ten. Has anyone done it? How long did it take you?
Hmm. I'm not an expert, but I'd guess the Bible because it's been around forever and is in every hotel drawer. But for books people actually chose to buy, maybe it's something like 'The Alchemist' by Paulo Coelho? That book seems to sell constantly all over the world. Or 'Harry Potter.' I should probably just look it up instead of guessing. It's interesting to think about what 'best-selling' really means—is it total copies over all time, or the speed of sales, or what? The Bible probably wins on total copies no matter how you slice it.
