Most do it via your account cloud. Open book on phone, read to page 120, close app. Later on tablet, you open same book and a little popup asks if you want to jump to the ‘latest read page.’ It’s pretty consistent now, though I still sometimes open to the wrong spot if I was skimming earlier. Not a dealbreaker, but you notice.

You'd think it’d be simple, but the implementation actually tells you a lot about the app’s architecture. Cheaper or older apps might just store progress locally and only upload it on a schedule, which is why you sometimes get that annoying ‘syncing’ message. More modern platforms treat your reading session like a live document, constantly updating a backend timestamp and paragraph identifier.

I prefer apps that let you force a sync from the settings menu. That’s saved me when I finished a chapter on my e-reader and wanted to pick up on my phone immediately—just hit sync on both and it’s aligned in seconds. The real test is switching between online and offline reading; a well-designed system will cache your local progress and merge it seamlessly once you’re back online, no duplicates or lost pages.

It’s the one feature I’d genuinely pay a subscription for. My reading bounces between my phone during a commute, my tablet at home, and occasionally my laptop browser. The sync usually works by saving your position in the book as a data point on the app’s server, tagged to your account. So when you open the book on another gadget, it pings the server and jumps you to that last saved location.

But it’s not foolproof. I’ve lost my place a couple times when my phone lost connection right before closing the app—it seems some apps only sync when you exit a chapter or after a few seconds of inactivity. I now make a habit of manually tapping the bookmark icon before I switch devices, just in case. The lag can be weird too; sometimes it’ll show the old page for a second before jumping, which is a minor but noticeable hiccup.

Honestly, the most reliable sync I’ve seen is on apps that treat your entire library as a cloud shelf, not just your progress. If the book itself is streamed or downloaded fresh from their server each time, the progress data seems to travel more cleanly with it.
