My partner loves light novels with vertical text. Finding an app that supports vertical writing direction AND is customizable for that mode is a challenge. Google Play Books handles vertical text fine, but its customization is limited. Moon+ can do it with some plugin fiddling, but it's not straightforward.

After my eyesight changed, customization became a necessity, not a luxury. I needed ultra-high contrast with specific RGB values. Most apps' 'dark mode' was still too gray. FBReader with its advanced color picker was the only one that let me set a true #000000 black background with pure white text without any tint. It made reading possible again.

I like to set different themes for different genres. A stark, modern font for sci-fi. A classic serif with sepia for historical fiction. Having to manually switch is a pain. The dream is an app that lets you assign a theme to a genre or tag automatically. No app does this natively, but you can approximate it with profiles in some.

For me, the answer isn't one app but a combo: I use Moon+ Reader for its layout engine and then pair it with a system-wide screen dimmer app for fine-tuning color temperature beyond what any reading app provides. No single app has given me that perfect 'midnight in a old library' amber on its own, but this workflow gets me there.

I need my app to sync reading position, but also my custom themes, across devices. This is where the big ecosystems fail. Moon+ syncs via Dropbox, but it's fiddly. I've resigned myself to using less-customizable apps like Kindle or Kobo because the seamless sync of my exact place and formatting is worth the trade-off.

Which iPhone book app offers the most customizable reading modes?

4 Answers2026-07-17 20:28:34
I get the appeal of tons of options, but sometimes it backfires. I tried an app that let me set a custom page-turn sound. I set it to a soft paper rustle. It was cool for a day, then deeply annoying. Now I just want silence and a clean page transition. The best 'customization' for me is an app that gets out of the way. That's why I keep coming back to the simple ones like ReadEra or even the basic Books app. They let me change the font and background, and that's it. My brain can focus on the story, not the settings menu.

Which free ebook reader has the most customizable reading modes?

For a pure, no-frills, but highly configurable experience on Windows, try the STDU Viewer. It's primarily for PDF, TIFF, and DJVU, but its rendering options are incredibly detailed. You can adjust color modes for monochrome displays, fine-tune contrast and brightness for scanned docs, and set custom color mappings. It's niche, but for the right document type, it offers customization others don't touch.
