Worth it as a genre benchmark, but temper expectations. The initial Wattpad-style rawness is part of its charm for some, a flaw for others. The later books try to add more depth to Hardin's backstory, but the core remains a rollercoaster of toxic passion. If that specific, emotionally volatile dynamic is your interest, you'll likely devour it. If you prefer more balanced partnerships, it might just annoy you.

Honestly, I can see why 'After' is a huge deal. It's practically a cultural landmark for the new adult genre. The toxic, obsessive dynamic between Tessa and Hardin isn't everyone's cup of tea, but it's central to the appeal. It captures that messy, all-consuming college romance intensity a lot of people either remember or fantasize about.

That said, if you're looking for a healthy relationship model, run. The whole series is a train wreck you can't look away from, full of miscommunication, jealousy, and emotional damage. I powered through all four books because I got invested in the drama, not because I rooted for them. It's like watching a soap opera on page.

For understanding the genre's evolution and why the Wattpad-to-bestseller pipeline exists, it's almost required reading. Just go in knowing the main characters are frustrating as hell.

It depends on what you like. If you want a light, fun romance, probably not. The main couple argues and breaks up constantly, and Hardin is pretty awful in the first book especially. The writing isn't super polished either, which sometimes took me out of the story.

But, I weirdly enjoyed it anyway? Maybe because it was different from the usual sweet stuff I read. It's dramatic and over-the-top, and sometimes that's fun. I read them all in a weekend when I was in a mood for something intense and kinda trashy. It definitely fits that 'can't put it down even though I'm cringing' category.

Is the Katee Robert series worth reading for new romance fans?

If you're just getting into romance and thinking about Katee Robert, I'd probably suggest starting elsewhere, honestly. Her stuff can be super divisive. 'Neon Gods' was my intro, and it's a wild, high-heat reinterpretation of Hades and Persephone set in a modern, vaguely dystopian city. The world-building is... kind of thin, more like a moody backdrop for the very explicit, power-dynamic-heavy relationship. It’s less about slow-burn tension and more about outright, negotiated kink right from the jump. Some people love that frankness and the way she plays with mythological roles, but for a new fan, it might be a bit of a shock to the system. It doesn’t really represent the whole genre. If you're cool with erotica-level steam and plots that serve the spicy scenes, you might enjoy the ride. But if you're looking for more nuanced emotional build-up or detailed fantasy worlds, her books might leave you cold. I finished it, but I haven't picked up another in the 'Dark Olympus' series—it felt a bit one-note for me.
