Arg! I looked this up last week when I was having a huge argument with a friend about whether or not women over 40 can lead big films in Hollywood. Hmm, Julia Roberts played 42 year old Elizabeth Gilbert in Eat Pray Love. She carried that whole movie on her own. That was a really great role for her, because her age really added to the depth of her character and you could really feel the weight of her life choices in every scene. Plus, she looked really, really good in it. The Italy sequences were just her at her most effortless and charming.

This movie has a different impact now that I’m older. I guess you could say there’s a lot of wisdom, as well as relativity, in following the life of a woman who has faced heartbreak, traveled the world, and is trying to find new love. It’s a different take on a romance than you typically see. Also, it’s kind of amazing that Julia Roberts was in her early 40s when they were filming this and that she still has so much great chemistry with Javier Bardem. I suppose what I’m saying is great stories and great performances aren’t limited to the young.

The bulk of the stories however were loaded with hostility towards the privileged white woman traveling the world in search of herself. There were plenty of parodies too. Roberts’ portrayal of a woman searching for herself formed part of the cultural landscape of a generation of movie-goers. Happy images of Roberts laughing on a bike in Bali and eating spaghetti in Rome are probably etched in the memories of many. They were also images of a woman of a certain age, getting much from her experiences which she wouldn’t have were she younger.
