Chapter two: conversations are mines waiting to explode. Each sentence of dialogue contains a subtext that hints at past events. “You look tired” can mean “I’m sorry you’re tired”, “You look awful” or even “I wish you were more tired”. They all avoiding talking about the thing that’s happened between them and focus on discussing the weather, the town and other safe subjects. But it’s in the silences, the hesitations and the change of subject that you really understand what’s going on. Then suddenly one of them says something nasty or painfully honest and it’s like a thunderclap. The low tide exposes the sharp rocks of their unresolved issues and through their dialogue you can see them carefully and painfully avoiding them.

A more subdued take on this scene is to show the ebb of the water at the end of ‘Twilight Ler’ and have this also serve as a means to set the scene and have the characters’ reactions to the exposure now left to the audience. Rather than the ending being controlled by fate, it is up to them.

As the water recedes, it leaves a trail of objects, destroyed in the chaos of their owners’ flight. Footprints, pressed into the damp earth, will gradually disappear too. The ways in which the characters respond to this realization of what they are left with – whether they try to rebuild what has been destroyed or simply walk away – is what really defines the ending of the play. Ambiguity, as always, is more satisfying than a neat bow tied up for the audience. It feels human, messy and true to life. And, ultimately, more interesting.
