One thing I keep noticing with the ONS-to-more plot is how often the initial complication isn't just about pregnancy or a secret identity, but about the power shift in who remembers the night. So many of the ones I gravitate toward have the woman being the one who leaves first, ghosting the guy, and he's the one left obsessing. It flips the expected script where the man is the careless player. That imbalance creates this immediate tension because the usual social scripts are useless. They can't have the 'walk of shame' conversation or the awkward breakfast; one party has already vanished, turning the other into a detective or a stalker.

Take something like 'The Unhoneymooners' setup, but imagine if the 'marriage of convenience' came after a night where she pretended to be someone else and dipped. The complication becomes this gnawing uncertainty about intent. Was it a deliberate escape from a bad situation? Was he so forgettable? That kind of psychological knot is way more engaging to me than a straightforward 'oops, we work together now' reveal. The relationship has to rebuild from a foundation of intentional disappearance, which introduces themes of trust and worth that feel heavier.

A lot of books use the ONS as a catalyst for a forced proximity scenario later, which can feel contrived if not done well. The best ones, though, make the complication internal first. The characters aren't just dealing with external fallout like a shared project or a surprise positive test; they're dealing with the fact that the night was actually meaningful for at least one of them, and that meaning is now a source of shame or vulnerability. The 'complication' is the emotional hangover that lasts longer than the physical one, forcing them to confront why they're so thrown by a stranger.

Honestly, a lot of them handle it pretty poorly, relying on the same three tropes: surprise baby, secret billionaire boss, or amnesia. It gets predictable. The good ones dig into the awkwardness of two people trying to build something real on a foundation of pure, unvarnished physical impulse. There's no courtship illusion to hide behind. Every misstep after that night feels magnified because you've already seen each other at your most unrestrained. The complication isn't the event; it's the stripping away of all the normal dating buffers.
