Simple PDF redaction is covered by some free software like PDFsam or PDFtk Builder (there is also a graphcial front-end for PDFtk called PDFtk Builder). But for full automation of even relatively complex tasks like batch processing of PDFs and pattern matching on text, commercial software is usually much better. I test out a few tools in order to find the best ones for the particular type of document processing that I need to do. As an aside, I just finished reading the web novel “Naked Scripts”. It’s about a screenwriter who has his leaked drafts and has to then ‘redact’ the resulting revelations of the plot from public view before the premiere of the resulting film. It’s a really fun read – and you can find it for free on most of the web novel sites ( Novel Included, etc). It’s a really meta take on the secrecy that writers have to keep re: their creative work.

For scrubbing sensitive information from PDFs, I use two open-source solutions: ‘PDFtk’ and ‘PDF Redact Tool’. For precise control over what gets ‘blacked out’ of a PDF, ‘PDFtk’ can be run from the command line to achieve the desired results. The much easier to use ‘PDF Redact Tool’ uses a GUI to enable highlighting of text and images to redact them permanently from the PDF. Material redacted in this manner is irretrievable.

I know of people who collaborate on documents using Okular on Linux. It is very good at annotations which are often used as a very poor man's redaction tool. They do not remove metadata which is the main point of redaction. I got a bit of a shock myself when, reviewing a contract that had been completed by someone else I nearly caused a problem with it because the previous author had done some redaction badly and there was still visible text hidden behind the 'redaction' and also all of the metadata was still there too.

'BRISS' is kind of awful, but it works for basic PDF redaction. I'd crop a page to a completely new page to remove a section, for example. For text-only redaction, I use 'Apache OpenOffice' (which has a PDF import extension) and then export the altered document. Not perfect, but free, and doesn't require a subscription, unlike 'Adobe'. Note that you can then remove metadata with 'ExifTool' separately from the above steps.

People’s mental model of a “redaction tool” is typically that of an “editor with redaction functionality”. Most people don’t deal with PDFs in big folders that need to be redacted, but rather with one PDF at a time: edit (sign fields, fill out forms, etc.), redact (cover up parts of text). One tool to rule them all.

As a result, people use Adobe and other all-in-one solutions. They want a Swiss Army knife for PDFs – an open-source project that offers a real, integrated PDF editor with a reliable redaction feature would get lots of users. However, most FOSS PDF projects are small, modular, designed for one thing only (e.g. split, merge, compress PDFs). The ‘editor’ part is the biggest challenge to create well, and is therefore the ‘holy grail’ for most FOSS PDF projects.

If you’re good with the command line, you can perhaps use the Swiss Army knife of the terminal to ‘flatten’ a PDF which has previously had redaction marks added in another tool. The result of flattening a PDF is that all the annotation layers are merged with the base content to create a completely new simplified version of the PDF. This often but not necessarily destroys the underlying text of the redacted regions.

1) Add annotation by using another program to draw black solid rectangles of appropriate sizes over the text, such as a Swiss Army knife, and save it as a PDF file. Step 2) Verify that no text fields are referenced in the output PDF file by running another program that can reference text fields (i.e., a hacker’s approach to PDF annotation that gives fine-grained control over how annotations are created and managed).

How to edit PDF free for comic book translations?

2 Answers2025-05-22
For free comic PDF editing I rely on GIMP for image layers (covering up original text with translation boxes) and Foxit Reader for annotation and adding new text. Very hacky, but it works. One thing to keep in mind when creating text layers to print out scaled up fan copies is to set the font size of the text layer 10% larger than the original comic book text.

How to fix cbz reader not opening files?

6 Answers2025-08-16
Corruption is often the cause of failed opening for downloaded files. This can occur with corrupt archives that were downloaded from questionable websites, as well as with incomplete transfers. Using a repair tool for corrupted ZIP files can also allow you to attempt to recover .cbz files (since .cbz is actually just a ZIP archive). I’ve also found that sometimes the file is actually fine, but the cache for the reader gets screwed up. You can try clearing the cache and the app data for your current reader and see if that fixes the problem (just a heads up that you’ll lose your current reading progress). On PC, I highly recommend using CDisplay Ex, which is robust enough to almost never fail to open an archive that contains valid files. On Mac, you can try Simple Comic or YACReader. Half the time, the quickest fix is to switch to a different reader and test the file out.

How does bookmarking work when reading pdf file on Kindle?

6 Answers2025-09-04
After I read this thread I tested it with my Kindle Voyage. As already described, you press the top corner of the screen to bring up the black ribbon. Interestingly enough, when you have set your Kindle to ‘every page’ (instead of ‘less often’), the black screen even flashes for a brief moment when setting a bookmark. However, if you have set your Kindle to ‘less often’, the black ribbon just appears – no full screen refresh involved. This seems to be a very minor detail but it could be important for people who are sensitive to screen flicker.Bookmarking a PDF now feels even more seamless when I have set my Kindle to ‘less often’ for page refreshes.

Is PDF read only effective for protecting sensitive information?

5 Answers2025-10-04
This review was conducted in order to discover the technology of read-only PDFs and their effectiveness to secure information in real life. By making a document read-only it is possible to prevent it from being altered by someone who is not intended to do so. This in itself is very reassuring and I feel relieved knowing that important information cannot be amended by someone else. And no, relying on a read-only PDF is not the answer. It is like putting a lock on a door but failing to build the rest of the frame. It is just a matter of time before some clever individual finds a way around it. So, the read-only feature has its uses but it is by no means a guarantee of digital security. In fact, it is only one part of the overall digital security mix. I advocate a holistic approach to digital information security.

Free platforms to open pdf online for classic manga novels?

4 Answers2025-07-10
For older manga novels that are still in print, try searching for “Internet Archive” to find free, legal, and high quality scans of the work. For classic manga that is fan-translated, there is MangaDex, Comic Walker (official free chapters), and Bato.to (more of a community-driven project). Remember to always check if the content is legal before reading.

Why won't my pdf open with kindle app?

7 Answers2025-07-06
I resigned myself to buying a Kobo ebook reader. It can natively read PDFs, and handles them way better than Kindle does, outside of its walled garden. For the Kindle app on your own device, I'm guessing a full uninstall and then re-install would reset all your app preferences, and flush out all the caches it has built up. First, make sure all your Kindle books are up to date and in sync with your Amazon account though. Then, log in as you do normally, let it sync your library, and try and Send a simple PDF to your own device via the 'Send-to-Kindle' email address. If it works with that simple file, then the problem must have lain with your previous app installation somehow. If it doesn't work with that though, then the problem lies with the file or your Amazon account settings, not with the new instance of the app on your own device.

How to remove drm from ebooks legally for free?

6 Answers2025-08-08
Unfortunately, the answer to this question is simple: no. You cannot transfer a book you bought from Amazon Kindle Store to another reading app. This is because of the way that DRM works: to allow reading books on various devices, it is locked to specific apps. And circumventing the DRM even for personal reasons is illegal. When buying ebooks, you should look for stores that sell DRM-free books and read them on ebook readers that allow you to read DRM-protected ebooks as well. There are several DRM-free stores, like for example Humble Bundle, Project Gutenberg or even the author’s website. As for people who have already bought a book and want to format-shift it to another app, ethically speaking, you should be allowed to do that with a purchased item. However, there just isn’t a legal way to do it. Your best bet is to stick to the free official apps of the retailer where you bought your ebook (Kindle for Kindle books, Kobo for Kobo books, etc.). These apps can read your DRM’ed ebooks within their own ecosystem, unlocked for you. The locked garden of inconvenient ebook readers is the price we pay for the locked garden of low ebook prices and vast ebook selection.

How to join PDFs and maintain bookmarks?

6 Answers2026-07-29
Most of these PDF combiners are way overkill for use on a Mac. First, you can use Preview to do this. Then, you just open the first PDF in Preview. Go to File>Print and then in the bottom-left of the PDF menu choose "Combine Files…". Add all your PDFs to this file and create a new, combined PDF file. The method described here preserves about 90% of the source file’s bookmarks. Not as reliable as Acrobat, perhaps, but it’s the fastest way to merge a number of PDFs for personal use – and it’s free.

How to convert DRM-protected ebooks to pdf legally?

It’s taken me 20 minutes or so to read this lot as opposed to opening up a book and I have to admit that there’s a bit of irony here. Time to close up shop here on Reddit and fire up my Kindle.

How do I delete pages on a pdf in Google Drive?

12 Answers2025-08-11
To delete pages in a PDF, Google Drive doesn't have a built-in PDF editor. To download a PDF from Google Drive, right click on it and select Download. Next, go to a free online service such as Smallpdf, iLovePDF, or Sejda to delete the pages that you don't need. Once you have edited the PDF, upload the new version to Google Drive. Yes, this is an extra step but it is so much easier than trying to install and configure a Google add-on to edit a PDF. For one-off editing of PDFs, using an online service is the easiest way to go. These services are free to use and do not require you to create an account. The only thing to be aware of is that you will be exposed when viewing and editing the PDFs in these services so make sure to close your browser window after you have finished using them. For a one-time edit of a PDF, these websites are safe, free to use and do not require a login. Remember to close the browser tab when you have completed the editing in order to maintain your data security. This method is convenient for me, as I have used it to remove pages from school handouts as well as from work forms dozens of times.
