Good question! I'm a completist, so I always go with the author's and editor's intended sequence, which is the table of contents order. It's: 1. Mr. Harrigan's Phone, 2. The Life of Chuck, 3. If It Bleeds, 4. Rat. There's a rhythm to how collections are assembled—often starting strong, placing the most challenging piece in the middle, and ending on a memorable note. 'Rat' as the final story leaves a lasting, gritty impression. I think deviating from that is doing a disservice to the craft of the collection as a single work of art, not just four random stories.

published order is definitely the way. Will Patton narrates the first three, and he's fantastic, especially with the Holly Gibney stuff in 'If It Bleeds.' Then 'Rat' is narrated by the author himself, Stephen King. Having King's own voice deliver that particular story about a struggling writer is incredibly meta and powerful. Switching from Patton's professional cadence to King's distinctive Maine growl for the finale is a deliberate, brilliant audio choice. You'd lose that designed transition if you listened out of order.

The official order is on the publisher's site or in the audiobook's chapter list. It goes 'Mr. Harrigan's Phone,' 'The Life of Chuck,' 'If It Bleeds,' 'Rat.' But honestly? 'The Life of Chuck' is so tonally different. If you're not into experimental, non-linear storytelling right off the bat, you might get turned off. Maybe skip to 'Mr. Harrigan's Phone' first for a more traditional King tale, then loop back to 'Chuck.' The connections between the stories are thematic, not plot-based, so you have some flexibility without spoiling anything.

I think the intended order is there for pacing reasons. 'Mr. Harrigan's Phone' is a solid, eerie opener. 'The Life of Chuck' is the emotional and experimental heart, which might lose people if it were first. Placing it second lets you settle in. 'If It Bleeds' is the big, lore-heavy sequel novella—it's the main event. And 'Rat' is a short, sharp, brilliant shock to the system to close things out. It's a well-constructed rollercoaster. I'd only change it on a re-listen, not for the first time.

I'm only familiar with the print version. Doesn't the audiobook just follow the same chapter layout? Seems straightforward.

Welcome to the filthy heart of sin, baby.
All the Ways We Sin is a raw and unapologetic erotica collection where passion doesn’t just burn : It fucks you senseless
From the thrill of your dangerous stepbrother pinning you against the wall while your parents sleep down the hall… to the shame of sneaking into your mother’s fiancé’s bed.
These stories don’t play nice. They’re supernatural, sci-fi, taboo, LGBTQ+, romantic, dark, obsessive, and so dangerously addictive you’ll be touching yourself before you finish the first page.
Every chapter is a brand-new sin. A fresh and wet craving. A whole new world where your desire ...always...fucking wins.
Some stories will lick you slow and sweet until you’re trembling. Some will drag you into the dark, choke you with lust, and leave you bruised and dripping.
Some are wild, strange, and so twisted they’ll make you cum harder than you ever have in your life.
But every single one answers the same dripping question:
If nobody was watching…
how fucking dirty would you sin

From a technical audiobook perspective, the files are usually numbered 01, 02, 03, 04. That's the order. They're mastered and encoded in that sequence. Your player will list them that way. It's not a mystery. The 'recommended order' is the numerical order. I think we sometimes over-complicate media consumption in the age of endless choice and 'watch order' videos for anime. This is a classic short story collection. The artistry is in each individual story, not in their interaction. Appreciate each as a solo performance, and the order becomes background noise.
Patton is the voice. I'd argue the biggest difference is in how he portrays isolation. Each story features a profoundly isolated protagonist, but the nature of that isolation changes. Craig's is the isolation of grief and a strange secret. Chuck's is the existential isolation of his situation. Holly's is the isolation of being someone who thinks differently, even among friends. The writer's is the brutal isolation of creative failure. Patton's narration wraps around each kind of loneliness differently—sometimes it's a blanket, sometimes it's a void. It's a thematic through-line he voices beautifully.
I wish more authors would release collections like this in audio. The 15-hour runtime is a sweet spot. It's substantial without being overwhelming. Each story is long enough to develop properly but short enough to maintain tension. King is a master of the novella length, and audio is a perfect medium for it. Your mind's eye creates the visuals while the narrator guides the pace. It's more engaging than watching a show sometimes. This collection, at this length, showcases that strength. It's not a novel chopped into pieces; it's four purpose-built, mid-length tales that benefit from the sustained focus an audiobook provides. I finished it feeling thoroughly entertained, not exhausted.
I find the suspense in print is more reliant on my own mood and environment. If I'm reading in a bright, noisy cafe, the effect is muted. The audiobook, with headphones, can create a pocket of suspense anywhere. I listened to parts on a sunny park bench and still felt a chill. The format's ability to isolate you and command your auditory attention makes the suspense more consistent and less dependent on your surroundings. It's a more reliable delivery system for dread. The print version requires your active collaboration to set the stage; the audiobook sets the stage for you, often masterfully.
Pair an audiobook with a physical activity. Listen to a wilderness survival thriller while hiking. Listen to a nautical thriller while on a boat or even just doing yard work. The environmental synergy heightens the immersion to an insane degree. Your order could be based on the activities you have planned. A commute thriller, a gym thriller, a before-bed thriller (though maybe not too scary!). The context becomes part of the memory of the book.
