My friend told me to skip the second one, 'The Whispering Room', saying it was a bit of a slog. I ignored them and read it anyway, and I'm glad I did. While the pacing might dip slightly in the middle of the series, it sets up crucial elements for the endgame. Skipping it would have left me with so many questions. Always go 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. It's the only way to get the full impact of the finale. Koontz plotted this as one giant story split into five volumes, not five separate adventures.

I'm only on the second book, so I can't speak to the full series, but yeah, everyone says to read them in order. 'The Silent Corner' sets up the whole world and Jane's motivation so completely that starting anywhere else seems impossible. The way her backstory is woven in is just heartbreaking. I need to know what happens next, which is why I'm already ordering book three.

In what order should I read Dean Koontz's Jane Hawk books

It's interesting to see how the 'voice' of the prose changes slightly. The first book is very tight to Jane's panicked, focused perspective. Later books, while still from her view, expand to show more of the world falling apart. That stylistic evolution is part of the fun, in order.
