I'm just sitting here waiting for someone to mention the non-Call-and-Gus related McMurtry books that sort of exist in the same universe, like 'Buffalo Girls.' Do those factor into a 'complete' read? Probably not, but it's a deep cut for the superfans.

Can we talk about how the covers influence this? My old paperback of 'Lonesome Dove' just looks like the book. The others have a more generic, series look. It's like the first one is the classic album, and the rest are the follow-ups. You gotta listen to the classic first.

At the end of the day, they're books, not a software installation. There's no wrong sequence that will corrupt the files. The worst that happens is you get a spoiler for an earlier book, but these aren't mystery novels where the spoiler ruins everything. They're character studies. Pick up the one whose description grabs you. The fact that you're even asking means you care, and that care will carry you through any minor narrative hiccups from reading 'out of order.' Just dive in.

My two cents: think about what you love in stories. If you're a character-first reader who loves deep dives into relationships and history, chronological might be your jam. You'll see every layer of friendship and rivalry build. If you're a plot-and-surprise reader who loves discovering a world and its mysteries alongside the characters, publication order is your only choice. 'Lonesome Dove' unfolds with these men already legends in their own right; part of the joy is piecing together their past from anecdotes. Choosing the order is really choosing what kind of reader you want to be for this series.

I don't think there's a wrong way, but there is a best way. Start with 'Lonesome Dove.' Just read that one book. Sit with it for a week. Let it breathe. Then decide if you want more. If you do, and you want to see how it all ends, go to 'Streets of Laredo.' If you finish 'Lonesome Dove' and you're just dying to spend more time with Gus and Call in their prime, then loop back to the prequels. Let your own reaction to the first book guide you. It's such a personal story that a rigid order feels almost disrespectful to the experience.
