Gosh, this question hit me right in my nostalgia. I was deep in the 'Twilight' fandom back in its peak, hunting for exactly this pairing. Honestly, the 'best' is subjective, but the most dedicated community and highest concentration of serious stories for Bella/Jane (Volturi!Bella stuff especially) was always on the old forums and independent archives. Twilighted.net had a specific section for darker pairings and Volturi-centric works that cultivated a lot of the early, lengthy AUs. A lot of those authors moved to AO3, but the curation isn't the same.
AO3 now has the sheer volume. The tagging system is your lifeline—you can filter for 'Bella Swan/Jane', 'Alternate Universe - Volturi', and 'Mates' to get close. But you have to wade through a sea of newer, sometimes shorter pieces. The real gems are the older epics cross-posted there. FanFiction.net still has a massive backlog, but discovery is harder and the culture for this niche pairing feels a bit frozen in 2010. My personal favorite, a fic called 'The Mercenary' where Bella is raised by the Volturi, started on Twilighted and is now scattered across multiple sites. It's a hunt, but the payoff for this specific dynamic is so unique.

I disagree with the AO3-only take; you're missing a huge chunk of history. The best foundational fics for this pairing are on FanFiction.net, written when the books were still coming out. The passion was raw then. Stories like 'The Queen's Vengeance' or 'Volturi Bella' defined the tropes everyone uses now—Bella discovered as a shield, Jane's fascination, the forced proximity in Volterra. The prose might be rougher compared to today's standards, but the ideas were groundbreaking. Plus, the reviews on those old fics often have amazing author notes and discussions that are like a time capsule. You can't understand the evolution of the pairing without digging there. Sure, use AO3 for new stuff, but for the classics that made the ship exist, FF.net is essential.

Try searching 'Twilight fanfiction Bella Jane mates' on Tumblr. A lot of writers there post snippets, moodboards, and links to their AO3 or Google Docs. The fandom's still alive in those reblog chains. Sometimes you'll find a WIP that's not fully tagged on the big archives yet.

Archive of Our Own is the only platform I bother with anymore. Everything else feels either dead or messy. The tags let you find exactly the kind of dynamic you want—slow-burn power struggles, obsessive mates bonds, dark AUs. You can even exclude Edward if you want a clean break from canon. The quality of writing on average seems higher, maybe because the tagging encourages more thoughtful categorization. I've found a few authors there who only write Volturi pairings, and their Bella/Jane stuff is incredibly detailed, focusing on Jane's inhuman perspective and Bella's human resilience. It's a small corner of the fandom, but it's very active if you know how to look.

I actually lost interest in Bella/Edward rewrites years back, so stumbling on a Bella/Jane oneshot was like a shock to the system. It starts with them as reluctant allies after the Cullens leave Forks, and the slow-burn isn't about romance, it's about two profoundly lonely, stubborn people realizing they share a capacity for obsessive focus. Bella's human vulnerability versus Jane's ancient, pain-inflicting power creates a fascinating push-pull. The writer played with Jane's loyalty to Aro as the central conflict—her duty versus this terrifying new pull toward someone who isn't afraid of her. It felt less like a fluffy ship and more like a character study in mutual corruption.
What stuck with me was how the dynamics invert the original's power balance. Bella isn't just a prize or a victim; her very humanity becomes a weapon against Jane's centuries of desensitization. Jane’s cruelty gets reinterpreted as a twisted form of protection. I've seen a few fics that frame their connection as a mutual unraveling, which is way more compelling to me than another destined-mate narrative. The best ones leave you wondering who is really saving whom, or if they're just dragging each other deeper into something morally gray.
Fanfiction.net used to be my go-to spot for 'Twilight' fanfics back in the day, especially for rare pairings like Bella and Jasper. The tagging system isn’t perfect, but if you dig deep enough, you’ll find some hidden gems. I stumbled upon a few multi-chapter stories there where Jasper’s empathy powers create this intense emotional bond with Bella, way deeper than the canon pairings. Some writers really explore how their dynamic would change the entire saga—like, imagine Jasper sensing Bella’s mood swings during her vampire transformation? Goldmine.
Archive of Our Own (AO3) is another treasure trove. The filters let you exclude Edward or Jacob-centric fics, so you can zero in on Bella/Jasper content. I’ve bookmarked a few where Jasper’s backstory as a Confederate soldier gets woven into Bella’s human life—think angst, historical flashbacks, and slow burns. The writing quality varies, but when it hits, it hits. Pro tip: try searching 'Jasper Hale/Bella Swan' or 'Bella/Jasper AU' for alternate universes where their bond is the main focus.
Weirdly enough, I feel like half the challenge is keeping Jane recognizable. She's a sadistic, centuries-old vampire enforcer who delights in inflicting agony, not some misunderstood soft girl. The real narrative tension, for me, comes from stretching her fundamental nature. Can a creature built on cold, artistic cruelty develop something resembling genuine attachment without it feeling like an OOC rewrite? The fics that work best don't shy away from that. They let her be terrifying, even to Bella, and make the 'why' the central mystery.
Then there's the power imbalance. Bella's human fragility versus Jane's ability to paralyze her with a thought isn't just a physical dynamic; it's a psychological minefield. A lot of stories fall into making Bella a passive doll or, conversely, giving her a sudden immunity to Jane's gift that feels unearned. The ones that dig into the unsettling, almost horror-adjacent potential of that imbalance—where trust is a monumental, terrifying act—are far more memorable than straightforward romances. It forces the romance to be about something other than proximity or fate.
