It’s actually been having an influence on my reading and the novel ‘Taming the Fire Dragon’ was one of them. It’s set in a unique take on a draconic society with a lot of elemental magic and follows the story of a young dragon rider trying to broker a peace between warring factions. Good fantasy reading if that’s your bag.

Netflix has been adding a lot of book-to-screen adaptations to their library (in addition to the ones they are making) and I was especially excited for the animated ‘Wings of Fire’ series (especially since it’s based off a beloved book series by author Tui T. Sutherland). The animated ‘Wings of Fire’ series is currently exclusive to Netflix.

A great adaptation for fans of the books and an excellent way for new viewers to become introduced to the world of Wings of Fire. The dialogue and voice acting really bring out the emotions and relationships of the characters, especially the perspectives of the dragons. The sound track is equally impressive and the series is definitely worth a watch. However, as with most book to screen adaptations, I highly recommend reading the books to delve deeper into the world of Wings of Fire. Netflix has a global reach, but do be aware that availability might vary slightly in certain regions.

I have been reading ‘Wings of Fire’ ever since the series of novels came out and I am absolutely loving the animated series that has come out too! The series is available on Netflix, which is amazing because it can be streamed at any time and it’s so easy to binge-watch the series. Each of the dragon tribes are highlighted in the animated series in an amazing way and it shows how wonderful and unique each of them are. The series is an amazing fantasy show for kids and adults alike and it has such an amazing story and it has been so wonderful to see all of the characters come to life through the voice cast and all of the amazing action scenes that have been animated so beautifully.

This conversation is actually motivating me to re-read the first arc again. In book form, the series is extremely binge-able. Highly investable. I can read a novel in a day if I want to. That’s really ‘streaming’ a show – staying up late into the night to find out what happens next. The pacing of the series is great, just like a great TV show. There are cliffhangers at the end of every chapter, and the series jumps around in perspective between chapters. So in that sense, the “platform” is your local library, your bookstore, your e-reader. The “subscription fee” is the price of the book. And the next “episode” is always available. Maybe I don’t need TV at all. The original format is perfect.

To make things clear, I’m assuming an official animated series would require 1) a production studio, 2) a distribution deal, and 3) a release platform. For Wings of Fire, none of these things are currently in the works, so it isn’t available on any platforms. However, there are the original novels, which are available for purchase. There are also the novels on Audible.com, Spotify, and other services as audiobooks. There are also the graphic novel adaptations, which are available as physical and digital books. And, of course, there is an enormous amount of fan-made animation available on video-sharing websites. This is the entirety of the Wings of Fire media landscape. It’s not perfect, but it’s what there is right now.

I'm so sorry for the false alarm. I just went to check my streaming apps to see if something had magically appeared but nope, nothing. That's kinda how I felt when someone a while ago said that there was going to be a 'Warriors' TV show and it turned out to be some amazing fan-made compilation. Some of the fan-made YouTube animatics even have better fight choreography than many of the big budget studio made films and TV shows. They really get the characters, their personalities and their powers. Until then, we can only read the books (and their accompanying audiobooks and graphic novels), and imagine how something could be animated. I've even gone back to listening to the audiobook for the 10th time or so, imagining what an animation of something like that would look like.

There was a time when I saw a petition on change.org that wanted Netflix to adapt a comic book series into a TV show. It got thousands of signatures, but I’ve never seen a petition actually change something. What gets things done is money. So, if you want a TV show adaptation of a comic book series, keep buying the books and have them gift to friends and family. That way there’s proof that there’s a market for the comic book series and the Streaming Services will take notice of the sales figures of the books and graphic novels. In the meantime, read the comic books in their original format. The comic book series is the core masterpiece and an adaptation would just be a bonus.

Taking this long is probably for the best. When movies are made too quickly, they are usually terrible, like the Eragon movie. I do not want that done to the Wings of Fire book series. It would take the creators five more years or so to write a perfect script, create perfect animation, and find the perfect voice for each character for an adapted version of Wings of Fire to be as good as or better than the books. It is probably taking this long because good animation and building a writers’ room to create an adaptation takes time. Hopefully, the creators are being caring and not neglecting the possibility of a film adaptation. We just have to be patient and hopefully there will be a good film made. If there even is a process going on for the potential film.

It’s an incredibly popular genre at the moment, with a wealth of fantastic fantasy stories about dragons already out there, so it’s surprising that no one has yet picked up on this set of books – all of which contain the core elements of a great story: a rich prophecy, a large scale war, and plenty of high stakes political intrigue, all through the eyes of some unique and wonderfully written protagonists. Netflix and Amazon, in particular, would be a good home for this, but there must be some fear that an all-dragon cast doesn’t connect with a human audience – which is wrong, as shown by great animated stories such as Watership Down with only rabbits in, and The Lions of Al-Rassan which is not animated, but follows a cast of characters in 17th century Spain. I really hope someone with great vision for a fantasy adaptation picks up these books.

The most consistent adaptation right now is the series of graphic novels published by Graphix (an imprint of Scholastic) that are adapting the main story arcs of the series into graphic novels. The art is colorful and frenetic and these are officially the canon adaptions for a visual fix of ‘Wings of Fire’. As for a streaming video adaption, there is nothing. All of the ‘Wings of Fire’ series online are 100% fan made and some of them are incredibly detailed and have even gotten hundreds of thousands of views. They are a testament to the love that this book series has received. But for now, they are not available on any of the typical streaming services for subscription. Maybe in a year or two there will be some adaptions available.
