What Are The Most Popular Tropes In Romantic Suspense Novels?

I have come to realize that Roberts writes about ‘normality’ being disrupted. The heroines of her best novels (The Obsession, The Liar, etc.) are usually trying to lead normal lives. They may be building a house, raising a child, starting a business. Then, suddenly, the past or a long hidden truth erupts into their lives. The romance is about finding safety in the arms of someone who loves them to return to a normal life. So Roberts’ top romantic suspense novels aren’t just about danger and romance. They are about themes of safety, home and reclaiming. And that’s what keeps me reading long after the plot twist is revealed. It’s satisfying to see a heroine confront whatever is threatening her and be rewarded with her happy ending.

New adult second chance romance is just so effective. They can have been youth/YA sweethearts in high school, even early college, and then life takes them in different directions for years. When they do meet again, they are both more fully realized adults with all their experience and messiness intact. Readers enjoy revisiting what went wrong for them in the past and learning about the things that they have grown from as well as whether or not that growth has prepared them to now be better suited for each other. There is a lot of wonderful nostalgia mixed with great hope for this type of romance.

The largest overarching trope in romance fiction is, without a doubt, the “Happily Ever After” (or at least “Happy For Now”) trope. Most romance books follow a fairly similar arc, no matter how dark, risk-filled or taboo the heroine’s journey is. The billionaire hero is not just rich, he is also devoted. The mafia boss hero is not just dangerous to everyone, he is also specially reserved for the heroine. Alien heroes choose humanity over their own kind to be with the heroine. This trope guarantees a safe, validating and exclusive journey for the heroine, culminating in a rollercoaster ride that ends in her ultimate safety. Other popular tropes, such as enemies-to-lovers, marriage-of-convenience and fated mates, are all just different routes to the same guarantee.

Why choose a romance crime novel? For starters, ‘In the Woods’ by Tana French is a fantastic choice of romance crime novel. The desire between detectives Rob Ryan and Cassie Maddox is as compelling as the murder of a young child that they are trying to solve. Then there’s ‘The Wife Between Us’ by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen, another twisty and addictive love story. Add historical twist to the mix by grabbing ‘The Alienist’ by Caleb Carr, a chilling 19th century mystery set in New York that has subtle undertones of romance. Without exception the books of crime listed here show that even when you’re in the grip of the central plot of the book, love can creep in and keep you enthralled until the very end.

Many artist/musician characters are portrayed with unkempt, black hair. This looks like hair that has been pulled through fingers of a tired artist, posing a problem as they attempt to work on canvas or composition. The hair may be pulled back into a ponytail with paint-splattered brushes stuck in it, or it may fall messily down the face of someone with intense eyes. Such hair is evidence of someone’s complete absorption in their work. A creative genius is often depicted romantically, with their physical appearance in disarray but deep inside them is a world of great creativity and feeling. In these characters, their black hair appears to be alive with their creative energy. It often escapes its confines, much as the character’s ideas cannot be contained.

Instead of going for an original plot/romance hybrid, dig around for historical unsolved crimes or really unusual court cases and write a mystery around them. Then determine what two people would have to work together in order to solve the real mystery. For example, a by-the-book archivist and a rebellious historian searching for evidence of a century-old theft, or a modern-day linguist and a modern-day security expert trying to crack a new cipher that was hidden in Victorian love letters. The mystery itself and the reason the two characters are working together lends itself to creating unique and fresh plot points, as well as making the romance between the two characters grow out of their differences and their obsessive goal to solve the mystery.

There are a few ways that Usopp and Perona are treated in Usopp/Perona fanwork. Most of all, the two are looked at through the lens of their dramatic qualities and through a few very common story patterns. First, the vast majority of stories that feature the two begin with their Drama Club conflict having taken place on Thriller Bark, before gradually evolving into an unlikely alliance after that. Also, I have found a lot of ‘comfort’ or ‘healing’ stories. The stories follow both of them as they come to terms with the loss they have had to deal with, in Usopp’s case his self-doubt as a fighter and in Perona’s case, the abandonment by Moria. The majority of the comfort stories depict both of them slowly realizing the other person’s vulnerability, leading to intimate conversations where they can drop their personas. It is a really sweet read as it’s not so much a romance, but more of two people who can finally be themselves around the other person. Perona’s ghost powers or Usopp’s workshop are typically used as a background for their intimate moments together. In addition to the single- Unovapaired story, the Usopp/Perona pairing is also often written in crossover or alternate universe settings – with examples ranging from paranormal investigators to real ghosts, to rival artists in an alternate version of the One Piece universe, with Usopp possibly being a sculptor or inventor, and Perona a gothic fashion designer or blogger. The core of their pairing is the contrast between their two visual styles and personalities, and fans love to mix and match these in all sorts of different scenarios – from forced proximity to post-canon! The pairing is also frequently written with an emotional focus, and can have a deep and affecting side to the fun that is the pairing of exaggerated bravado with gothic whimsy. A great deal of fun can be had with the two characters, and their writer’s have certainly had fun, often managing to balance the dramatic pouts of the ghost princess with the frantic gestures of the cowardly liar.

Recently finished ‘The Sialkot Saga’ by Ashwin Sanghi. Beautifully written love story amidst a historical epic. Author has done a great job of merging romance with the history of partition in a very new-school way. On the other hand, I’m stuck in Half Love by Shyam Selvadurai. The way he has written a queer romance set in the Delhi art world is beautiful. The tender and sensitive way in which he has portrayed closeted love to its utmost is breathtaking. Both these books are proof that in India, romance is no longer restricted to a bunch of saris and samosas. Both these authors are doing great work by breaking all sorts of stereotypes in these novels, page after page.

I have noticed many cozy mysteries follow this structure. There are many books with amateur female sleuths who run a bakery, are booksellers, or are librarians, and they fall in love with the local detective or sheriff. I call this sub-trope amateur female sleuths who are romantically involved with law enforcement. The Hannah Swensen series by Joanne Fluke featuring Mike Kingston is a great example of a good and also frustrating amateur female sleuth series.
