Can anyone recommend novels that do this but from the perspective of the 'villain' or someone who knows they're doing wrong? Not an anti-hero with a code, but someone fully aware their actions are immoral, yet their psychology compels them. That introspection of knowingly choosing the 'bad' path because of mental wiring seems like a deeper cut into the theme.
It's all about the gray areas created by perspective. A character with narcissistic personality disorder might perform a 'selfless' act, but their internal monologue reveals it was entirely for ego and admiration. The external action looks moral, the internal motivation is rotten. Or the reverse: a socially anxious person avoids a situation they see as morally fraught, but others interpret it as coldness. The novel lives in that gap between internal logic and external judgment, where true morality becomes incredibly slippery.
I prefer when it's subtle. Not a character loudly debating ethics, but one whose actions reveal a fractured moral logic through small, telling details. The way they remember an event, the things they choose to omit in their own internal narrative, the casual justifications for cruelty. The exploration happens in the gaps and slips. You have to piece together their broken ethical compass from the shards they show you. That feels more true to how our minds actually work—we're not always having grand debates with ourselves; we're often just quietly lying to ourselves.
I'd argue it's less about exploring 'moral dilemmas' and more about dismantling the idea of a stable moral self. A lot of these books show how circumstance, trauma, or cognitive bias can warp a person's ethical compass in real time. It's not a neat 'should I do A or B?' It's watching someone's entire framework for deciding between A and B crumble under psychological pressure. The dilemma becomes: is there even a 'true' moral agent left amidst the chaos of their mind?
For me, the most compelling ones tie the moral quandary to a specific mental state or disorder. Like, a character with severe OCD might be trapped in a dilemma around contamination and harm—is avoiding a perceived contaminant a moral necessity to protect others, or a selfish compulsion? The pathology frames the ethical problem in a way a 'sane' character couldn't. It asks: how does a malfunctioning mind assign moral weight? The answer is often heartbreakingly skewed.

After my best friend Lily Warren was assaulted, she took her own life.
I was the only person who knew who had done it.
And I was the one who helped cover for him.
When Lily's mother knelt at my feet, begging me to tell the truth, I turned away with a cold face.
When the people in town called me heartless and smashed my door, I let my dog, Buddy, attack them without hesitation.
Ten years later, I was dying.
My long-lost best friend, Claire Sutton, returned as the wealthiest woman in the country. The first thing she did was drag me onto the memory-trial platform normally reserved for death-row prisoners.
"Rachel Vale, you disgusting animal. You protected a rapist. Lily and I were blind to ever call you our friend!
"Lily has been dead for ten years, and you let her attacker walk free for ten years!
"Today, I'm going to use the memory extractor I developed to see exactly who you've been protecting!"
But when the real culprit appeared before everyone, Claire Sutton collapsed on the spot.
She could barely stay on her knees.

“In psychology, every feeling differs in each other through stages, that’s why different terms are created from affection, attachment, lust, and love. My feeling for you is only pure affection, it was not lust nor love. Our attachment to each other is not that strong so we cannot assume there is love between us, even after our first sight. We’ve just met. I am uncertain about what I feel for you. Space from you is honestly what I need right now. My apologies but I cannot be with you.”
It was professionally being an unprofessional story of a lover’s bump in a dump. Addictive that will surely proactive your nights. A book that will stick with you until the last pages, ages with a savage!

In 'Crime and Punishment', Dostoevsky dives deep into the psyche of Raskolnikov, a man who justifies murder as a means to a greater end. The novel is a relentless exploration of guilt, redemption, and the human condition. It’s a gripping tale that forces readers to confront their own moral compass, much like 'The Brothers Karamazov'. The way Dostoevsky intertwines philosophical debates with raw emotion is unparalleled.
Another gem is 'Les Misérables' by Victor Hugo, which tackles justice, mercy, and societal inequality through the eyes of Jean Valjean. His journey from a convict to a man of virtue is both heart-wrenching and inspiring. The moral struggles faced by characters like Inspector Javert add layers of complexity, making it a timeless exploration of ethics and humanity.
