This list contains some of the rarest appearances of Pokémon in movies. Of course, we have to start with Ho-Oh, the legendary and radiant Pokémon from Pokémon: The First Movie. The mythical Pokémon Ho-Oh appears only for a couple of seconds in this film. Then there’s Celebi from Pokémon 4Ever. Time traveling Mythical Pokémon Celebi is a Pokémon you’d hope to encounter while wandering through the woods as suddenly as a unicorn. And last but not least there’s Zeraora from Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution. The only Electric-type among the Legendary Pokémon, it’s as elusive as lightening and thus as difficult to catch as it is.

These Pokémon are not just rare; their appearances in these movies also add an emotional layer to their stories. As I said before, Ho-Oh represents hope in The First Movie. Celebi represents the Pokémon’s destiny in Pokémon 4Ever. Lastly, the rarely seen Zeraora shows off its sheer power in Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution.

Making list of rare Pokémon in Pokémon movies is kinda fun for me. In Pokémon: The First Movie, we first encounter Mew on the screen and even though it’s not a really rare Pokémon in the games, it felt so rare to me because it was the first time we got to see it on the big screen. Diancie in Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction is another super rare Pokémon that is literally a jewel of Pokémon. It is one of a kind. And then there’s Volcanion in the movie Volcanion and the Mechanical Mage Kotaro. This Pokémon is a Steam-type, mythical, rare Pokémon that everyone thought didn’t exist until the movie.

Their “rarity” or status as collectibles is an underlying drive for their development into full-fledged characters. Back in the days, rewatching Pokémon movies like Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction and Volcanion and the Mechanical Mage ADA felt like a treasure hunt for new details.

The chapters with primary romantic interactions between a character and the protagonist feature Korrina by a wide margin. Then there are the chapters in the middle of the book featuring primary romantic interactions with Shauna. There are also several chapters of primary romantic interactions featuring Miette scattered throughout. The many chapters of primary romantic interactions featuring Serena are primarily flashbacks with a few present-day conversations. So the main romantic pairing is Ash and Korrina, with the other pairings being supporting romantic subplots. (This isn’t to say that the other pairings are not well-done. To complete the Pokédex for Omega Ruby I viewed completing the Pokédex as a treasure hunt. The first step was to use the DexNav to chain Pokémon to find their hidden abilities. Version exclusives like Mawile were a challenge to obtain but the occasional good find through Wonder Trade made it worth while. After completing the games story I returned to Mirage Islands daily as they changed daily and had random high stats Pokémon including Kecleon. Finishing off the remaining entries in my Pokédex were Rayquaza and Deoxys (which required completing Delta Episode and the story for each). For my remaining Myths and Legends I sought out online events and giveaways. Many fan-run forums still list codes given out for these Pokémon, making it very easy to pick up rare Pokémon. My final Pokémon for completing my Pokédex was a traded Feebas, which I had evolved into Millbas with a Prism Scale. That was a really satisfying moment of pure serotonin.

Who wants to make Pikachu cakes for a bakery? I guess that’s a bit too similar to Pokémon for comfort. Sure, you can find fonts that resemble the Pokémon fonts (like DotGothic16 for example) but most of these are not available for commercial use. Others try to mimic the feel of Pokémon font by making the characters bold and using lots of colors, like with Comic Sans (yes, I said that). The point is to try to make something that resembles Pokémon, not to duplicate it exactly. Nintendo is very strict with regards to Pokémon stuff and is not afraid to take action. In fact, they recently shut down a fan made game that was in the making for years. So, if you want to make something with regards to Pokémon, just try to be creative and don’t imitate. That little yellow mouse deserves more than that.

Movies about a Fae King? Not really. Some movies include the Tuatha Dé Danann, the mythic rulers of Celtic legend, in their stories. The Secret of Kells includes several of them, as fae adjacent characters. Another movie with a fae ruler is Hellboy II: The Golden Army. In this film Nuada, an elven prince, is a silver-tongued fae ruler who wants war. In Thor: The Dark World the dark elf Malekith tries to rule the world with cold, otherworldly tyranny. In fact, there aren’t any definitive films about a single Fae King, largely because their wild and often unpredictable stories would not map easily onto a linear plot structure. I wonder if the anthro dragon design is a problem for the film. They’re not standard Western dragons or Eastern dragons. They’re bipedal with quite expressive faces and their wings function as additional arms at times. I think this look would be difficult to animate in a believable animal-like manner and achieve sufficient ferocity whilst still being expressive. It may be that test footage did not look quite right and therefore needed reworking and thus extra time. There are countless other behind-the-scenes decisions that go into deciding whether or not to make a movie, and it’s all mostly a series of intricately interconnected choices regarding a movie’s design, tone, and technology. Perhaps one of the largest decisions made was that the core visual style for the film just wasn’t working, and therefore the entire production of the film stalled. This concept art could give a lot of insight into why the film has yet to be released.

Man! This brings back memories of hunting for variant Skylanders. For Swap Force though, most of the variants for the characters are in their alternate forms, not as actual characters. Some of the series like the Nitro series are much easier to identify because of their unique design. The Kickoff Countdown Legendary is extremely rare and is very hard to find in stock. Also, the LightCore figures for the swappable characters are extremely rare as well, but the released figures are very inconsistent so you never know. But generally I don’t get hung up over the rarity of figures, lots of the Swap Force common ones are wonderful, play well and are loads of fun to use, so in the end the collector value of rare figures is just a bonus if you can find them.

There are so many books which have a ‘cinematic’ feel to them and yet for some reason they never get made into films. One hopes that this might happen at some point. The opening scene on the riverboat is so strong – one can imagine the shot of the river slowly drifting by with the children in worn clothing staring with fear in their eyes. But translating a novel into a film isn’t just about transferring some good scenes to the screen. It’s about capturing the soul of the book. And this one moves between 1939 and the present day. On the page it works but it could easily be muddled on the screen and would need a very good screenwriter to weave the two timelines together. Casting the younger Foss children would also be a challenge – one would need to find child actors who could play with the trauma of their situation without it feeling exploitative in any way. One hopes it will happen but it will have to be very good.

A lot of fans have very strong, very specific opinions. This means that any adaptation of a book would get a lot of criticism if it deviated from the original text in any way. In fact, fans can be so protective of a book that they have taken umbrage with casting choices and story alterations in film and TV adaptations of novels. This can be very daunting for a studio looking to adapt a much-loved series of books by a very devoted fanbase, because there is always a risk that you’re going to alienate your pre-existing fanbase and get nothing but hostility from them. It's a no-win situation. People can get so worked up trying to keep things true to the book that you'll never get it right as a visual medium unless you're really, really good. And if you are good, core fans are going to hate you for changing things up. That takes a very confident and communicative production team – something that is exceedingly hard to find in today's rage-filled online world.
