How Do I Read Madeline Hunter Books In Order By Series?

Big Madeline Hunter fan here! I own most of her historical romance series but never read them in publication order. Need the proper reading sequence for each character group.

I just go by publication order for any author with a complex universe. For Madeline Hunter, that means starting with her first published book, 'By Arrangement' (1999). From there, you follow her writing journey: 'By Design' (2000), 'By Possession' (2002), then the Regency trilogy, and so on. This way, you experience the evolution of her writing style and see the world expand as she built it.

You won't get confused by timeline jumps because you're seeing the story unfold as her readers did at the time. It's the most authentic way to absorb the whole saga, in my opinion.

It's not as complicated as some family sagas. For the Medieval 'By' series, the order is: 1. By Arrangement, 2. By Design, 3. By Possession. For the Regency 'Rogue' series: 1. The Seducer, 2. The Charmer, 3. The Saint. The 'Sporting' series is just two books: 'The Romantic' and 'The Protector'. There's also some earlier, less-connected standalones like 'The Sinister Monk'.

My advice? Print this list out and stick it on your fridge. Cross them off as you go. It's satisfying to see your progress through her wonderful, interconnected world.

I envy anyone starting this journey fresh. That feeling of discovering a new author with a deep backlist is magical. My advice? Don't rush. Savor each book. The order is a framework, not a race. Let yourself fall in love with each couple, spend time in each historical period she paints so vividly. The connections will click into place naturally as you go along.

The worst thing you could do is speed-read through them just to 'complete the list'. These books deserve to be lingered over.

Is there an audiobook version for the whole series? I'm an audio listener, and narrators make a huge difference. If one series has a fantastic narrator and another has a mediocre one, I might jump around based on that, order be damned. A great narrator can elevate a good book to a sublime experience, while a bad one can ruin it. Has anyone done the full series on audio and can comment on consistency?

I tried to get into her books but started with what turned out to be book three of a series. I spent the whole time feeling like I was missing inside jokes and backstory. It put me off. So from a beginner's perspective, yes, order matters for immersion. Don't make my mistake. Do a tiny bit of research first, pick the first book of any series (Medieval or Regency), and start there. It makes the world feel solid and real from page one, not like you're arriving late to a party.

Which Madeline Hunter series list shows the books in chronological order?

After reading so many of these, they blend together. I couldn’t tell you the exact order anymore. I just remember the characters I loved. The brooding duke from ‘The Seducer’, the witty banter in ‘The Charmer’. The list of books in order is less important than the list of favorite moments in your heart, you know?

Where can I find a complete publication order list for Madeline Hunter books?

I think the confusion stems from some of her early books being reissued with new covers and sometimes even slightly tweaked titles. So a list might show the reissue date, not the original. That's why a source that uses library data, like WorldCat, is more reliable for true first publication.

In what order should I read Madeline Hunter’s Rothwell family novels?

If you're anal about timelines like me, the internal chronology is tight. Events in one book are referenced in the next as recent gossip or past scandals. Reading in order lets those references land as clever callbacks rather than confusing name-drops.

What is the correct reading order for Madeline Hunter’s medieval romances?

A practical tip: Goodreads lists are your friend. Search for 'Madeline Hunter medieval series order' and you'll find several fan-created lists with votes and comments. Compare a couple of them to see the consensus. Often, the top-voted list is a hybrid—it groups series together but also suggests the best flow between groups. Print it out or save it on your phone. Then, just check off each title as you go. This method saved me from the paralysis of trying to figure it out from scratch. It's the collective intelligence of the romance community at work.

Someone in a Facebook group made a gorgeous printable reading order checklist with little icons for each series. It was a game-changer. The visual separation made it all click. Maybe search for 'Madeline Hunter reading checklist'—you might find a fan-made PDF that lays it out more clearly than any paragraph description ever could.

What is the reading order for the hunter series book?

figuring out the best reading order can be a bit tricky. The series starts with 'The Hunter'—it’s the perfect introduction to the world and characters. After that, I recommend moving to 'The Prey,' which deepens the lore and ramps up the action. 'The Kill' comes next, tying together many threads from the first two books. Some fans argue you can read 'The Trap' as a standalone, but I think it hits harder after the first three. If you’re a completionist, don’t skip the spin-offs like 'The Shadow,' but they’re not essential to the main storyline. The series has a few novellas, like 'The Chase,' which are fun but optional. The author’s writing style evolves, so reading in order lets you appreciate the growth. Stick to the core trilogy first, then explore the extras if you’re hooked.
