Honestly, for pure offline archiving of stuff you own, nothing touches Calibre Companion paired with a good reader app. It's not a slick, all-in-one storefront, but that's the point. You curate your own collection from various sources, sideload it, and it's yours forever, no DRM, no servers checking your license. The offline experience is perfect because the files are physically on your device. For serialized fiction from official platforms, Webnovel and Radish are decent, but they often require an active subscription or coins to keep chapters downloaded permanently, which feels like renting the offline privilege.

The debate around offline features always circles back to how much you actually use them. I switched between three major apps last year during a trip with terrible Wi-Fi, and the differences were stark. Moon+ Reader Pro, while not exclusively a novel app, handled my sideloaded EPUBs flawlessly—no hiccups, no lost progress, and the battery drain was minimal. For webnovels or serials, I found Webnovel's download function surprisingly robust; you can grab huge chunks of an ongoing story, and it manages updates by flagging already-downloaded chapters. The sync between devices is less smooth, though.
What drags an app down for me is when 'offline' feels like a second-class feature. Some free apps with ad-based models will limit how many chapters you can store locally or purge your cache aggressively. I had one delete a whole downloaded novel after a week, claiming it was to 'save space' automatically. Ridiculous. If offline is a priority, paying for a premium version or an app built around personal libraries (like ReadEra or Lithium) avoids those headaches. The best balance I've seen is in apps that treat offline as the default, not an extra—where opening the app without a connection doesn't trigger a panic screen but just shows your library, ready to go.

I woke up inside a novel, and not even as an important character.
I became a pretty background extra in a smut novel.
My brother, however, was the only normal person in the entire story.
His character setting was the one man the soft, delicate heroine could never win over.
He was the cold, unattainable Prince Charming she could never conquer.
When the heroine cried and confessed her love, he was studying.
When she offered him her whole heart and body, he was busy starting a company.
When she spiraled into scandals and nightlife, he was already a billionaire, calm and untouchable.
I thought he would live a quiet, ascetic life forever.
Until one night, I walked in on him at midnight…
holding a piece of clothing I recognized all too well, murmuring a name over and over, a name so familiar that my scalp tingled.
ComiXology (well, now Kindle Comics) is actually amazing for offline comic reading. The guided view technology downloads with the comic, so you can still use that panel-by-panel view without a connection. For dense graphic novels, being able to zoom in on panels offline is a huge plus. If your 'novel' reading includes graphic novels, its specialised features put it ahead of general readers.
For travelers, time zone support can be a weird offline issue. If you download a chapter in one time zone and read it in another, does the app correctly mark it as read based on your local time, or does it get confused and mess up your reading history? I've had apps show I read a chapter 'in the future' because of time zone mismatches in offline logs.
It's a tiny detail, but it speaks to the depth of testing the developers have done for the offline use case.
Wattpad's offline reading is okay for downloading stories you're following, but it's not the most elegant. Sometimes it only caches a few chapters ahead, so if you're going truly offline for a while, you need to plan. It's serviceable for fanfiction and serials, but I wouldn't rely on it as my primary offline app for novels.
Cross-platform sync for offline status is a dream. If I download a book on my iPad, I'd love for my iPhone to know it's downloaded somewhere in my ecosystem, maybe offering a one-tap option to download it there too without having to hunt through the store again. Or, at the very least, keep my reading progress and annotations in sync across devices once they're both back online, so my offline session on one device isn't an island.
