How Do Readership Stats Compare On Wattpad Vs AO3?

These two platforms operate on completely different like mechanisms.

First, take On Wattpad: when you follow a serial or read a story on it, you do not just give a single like to the entire story to finish the process. For every newly updated chapter, every individually separated chapter, you can cast a separate vote. To put it plainly, this vote means every chapter has its own like button. As a result, any section of a story that particularly resonates with readers, any popular part, can accumulate a high number of votes on its own. Even if the overall story has mixed reviews, one standout chapter can still generate impressive engagement data from readers' votes.

When it comes to AO3, the rules are entirely different. A user account can only leave one ""kudos"" for each complete work, and this kudos is the platform's equivalent of a like.

In my view, this rule means you can only give your recognition to a work once in a lifetime. Once you have liked that work, you cannot add another, you cannot like it a second time. People will not click the like button casually as they would when mindlessly scrolling and liking their friends' daily updates on their phones. Instead, they will read the work carefully, and only click that kudos if they truly think it is good. In the end, the resulting like data is far more reliable. When I look for new stories to read myself, I often use this data as a reference, relying on it to judge which works are genuinely good stories that hold up to readers' scrutiny.

I’ve never used Wattpad myself. From what I’ve heard it depends a lot on social media algorithms. That kind of system can make it harder for creators who're in smaller or more specific niches. The spotlight tends to go to content that goes viral which's n’t always the same as good or meaningful stories. It’s tough for people, with voices to get noticed when the system favors what’s already popular.

AO3 does not depend much on algorithms. You do not need to rely on a computer system to decide who can see your fanfic. It simply sits there waiting for users to find it by searching titles, authors, summaries or tags.

The audiences for the fanfic I have written are similar on both platforms. However AO3 readers tend to focus on pairings while Wattpad readers are more interested in original characters.
