Odd how one stumbles upon strange bits of art in their childhood. For me, ‘Kambi’ was made by the wonderful Toonz Animation. It is a quietly wonderful film. There is no attempt to create realism in this, nor indeed even to follow traditional cartooning. What it does is to evoke a mood – not just visually but aurally as well. There are slow, deliberate movements which often are repeated. The backgrounds do not simply sit there – they breathe, pulse and change. It is a meditative film. Such patient, visually-focused work would never be made in today’s cartoons which are merely fast-paced vehicles for one joke after another.

If one looks at it from a film-making perspective then yes, making an original thriller is a big risk. You don’t have any established fans from the books in the audience. ‘Kamaveri’ team had faith in their creation and went for it. That takes a lot of confidence and I respect them for it. Every scene was structured to make the events as believable as possible. As there was no novel to fall back on for detailed descriptions, every detail had to be showcased on screen to get the message across. Strong performances and a great setting were used to create the scenes and they succeeded in doing so. This movie is a prime example of good cinematic storytelling which is great to witness in any film-making scenario.

Honestly, most of the Kannada content available online is fairly plain. For more meaningful tension, I deliberately avoid stories labeled as ‘sex stories’ and look for romantic fiction that’s been described as ‘mature’ or ‘slow-burn’. There’s this one story, ‘Mouna’ I think, where a married couple live in silence. Eventually the wife starts leaving notes all over the house for her husband to find, with increasing degrees of desire expressed. It was really hot because it was all about the wait and trying to read between the lines. Such content is written by Kannada authors and can be found in online forums. Most of them deal with the human mind as the ultimate erogenous zone.

A blast from the past! While Mastram is often referred to as a single book, it is actually a pseudonym for a large number of very cheap, erotic pulp novels published in North India in the 80s and 90s. While the plots of the individual books are repeatedly repeated, the basic structure is always that of a young, naive girl from a village, a corrupt landlord/stranger, lots of melodramatic plot and many build-ups to the sex scenes, described in very flowery and coded language to make as much as possible of the restricted nature of the publications. Much drama, sudden switch of emotion and character, and much over-the-top behavior is the stock-in-trade of this bizarre brand of popular culture. Melodrama and cliché are written into the very fabric of the novels, and the vast majority were read in secret by the author and by his readers, who passed the books from hand to hand in guilty, forbidden pleasure. Not exactly literature, but then again, they managed to carve out a unique and very distinct place in the culture.

Hunting down free reads can be a real adventure. For “Ka: depicting myth,” I searched the digital library Archive.org, where you can often find out-of-print books people have donated. This year I even found Roberto Calasso’s The Ruin of Kasch there. Online forums for book enthusiasts like Goodreads groups and the very active community on Reddit’s r/FreeEBOOKS often post legitimate free ebook alerts. Be sure to avoid unsavory sites that can provide all sorts of nasty surprises, including the occasional dose of malware. Nothing ruins an otherwise enjoyable foray into mythology like that!

A friend of mine claims that later stories (from the early 2000s onwards) by Mastram tried to incorporate more of a plot and an even darker ending. He’s talking about stories and scenes of betrayal, blackmail and even a few murders. Apparently, Mastram tried to change the tone of his stories to make them more comparable to the typical crime thriller. I haven’t been able to track down and read these stories myself, but it would be interesting to see how they developed. Maybe the ending of a Mastram story changed from simple satisfaction to something darker and more complex. Or perhaps even the ending of a Mastram-style story was meant to change. Maybe the true ending of a Mastram-style story wasn’t a satisfaction at all, but rather the moment when the simple identity of the stories was lost in a attempt to change them into something completely different – in other words, into a different genre of story.

Yes, you can read Tamil PDFs on Kindle but there are some work arounds required. My cousin who reads a lot of Tamil literature had lots of problems with her Kindle reading Tamil PDFs. However she has to manually adjust the margins of each book. There are tablets that support reading Tamil books specifically like ‘Lithium’ but then you will be giving up the Kindle’s glare-free reading experience.
