I'm just here for the fishing descriptions in Part I. The rest was fine, but man, those pages made me want to be on a boat in the Gulf Stream. The order didn't matter much to me; I was just in it for the atmosphere. The book sort of loses that pristine feel after Bimini, which is probably intentional.

I'm waiting to see if anyone has a genuinely compelling argument for a different sequence. Most comments just reiterate the standard order, which is fine, but I'm curious about the heretical takes.

I loved the shift to Cuba. After the heartbreaking end of Bimini, the change of setting and pace was a relief. It's like the novel takes a breath. Then it holds that breath, building a different kind of tension, until the explosive release in At Sea. The order is masterful in that regard—it controls the reader's emotional respiration.

It's a novel in three parts. Not five, not two. Three. They are numbered. I feel like this is the most straightforward reading order question in all of literature. Save your mental energy for untangling Faulkner.

Bimini first. No question. It establishes everything—his love for his sons, his relationship with the sea, the looming shadow of the war. Without that foundation, his actions later seem merely grim, not tragically motivated. Cuba then shows what's left when that foundation is ripped away. At Sea is the consequence. It's a perfect, if painful, downward spiral. Changing it would soften the impact.
