My method is a hybrid. I'll start with publication order for the first three or four core books to get the foundation. Then, if there's a highly recommended novella or sidequel that slots in between, I'll read that next before continuing. It breaks up the potential monotony of a linear march through thousands of pages and often deepens my connection to side characters just before they become important in the main plot again.

Can we talk about how some 'reading order' guides are needlessly complicated? They'll have you jumping between chapters of different books. At that point, you're not reading a story; you're conducting a scholarly analysis. For a first-time reader, that's a surefire way to kill all joy. Keep it simple: either the order they were written, or the order the events happened. Don't over-engineer your leisure time.

Pay attention to in-universe date stamps. Some authors helpfully include a year or an 'Age' at the start of chapters. You can literally line the books up by those dates for a true chronological read. It's a lot of work, but for the ultra-dedicated, it's the most immersive way to live the history of that world from start to finish.

Re-read order is different from first-read order. On a re-read, I go full chronological, including all novellas and deleted scenes. The initial mystery is gone, so now I can appreciate the full sweep of history and catch foreshadowing I missed. The 'best' order isn't static; it changes depending on whether you're a newbie or a veteran revisiting the world.

Honestly, after reading 40+ comments, I'm more confused than when I started. I think I'll just watch the TV show.

What reading order works for the top classic fantasy series of all time?

With something like 'The Witcher', there's a short story collection first—'The Last Wish'. It introduces Geralt, establishes the tone, and gives you the rules of the world. Skipping it to go straight into the saga novels is a huge mistake; you'll miss crucial context and character foundations.

Look for omnibus editions or box sets. Publishers often bundle books in the order they deem most accessible for new readers, which might be a hybrid approach. This can be a great, low-effort way to go. Also, audiobook versions sometimes have narrator changes or production quirks that make a particular order more listenable. Audible reviews often mention if listening in a different sequence improved the experience.

Focus on the emotional journey you want. Do you want to feel hopeful? Start with something like 'The Hands of the Emperor'. Do you want to feel devastated? Start with 'The First Law' trilogy. Do you want cozy mystery vibes? Try 'Legends & Lattes'. Fantasy is an emotion machine. Your reading order should serve your emotional needs at the time. Sometimes you need a brutal, cynical story; sometimes you need a gentle, restorative one. Tuning into that can lead you to the perfect next book, regardless of its spot on an all-time-great list.

Which reading order works best for complex fantasy book trilogies?

Sometimes the best move is to read a completely different, simpler book in between each volume of a complex trilogy. It gives your brain a rest, prevents burnout, and lets the dense ideas of the fantasy world marinate. You return to the next book refreshed and hungry for more. So my order is: Complex Book 1, Lighthearted Romance Novel, Complex Book 2, Mystery Thriller, Complex Book 3. The palette cleansers make the main course more enjoyable and help prevent the details of the complex world from becoming a fatiguing blur. Variety is the spice of reading life.

I appreciate when authors release 'bind-up' editions that compile the main novels and all the relevant short stories in the correct narrative order. It takes the guesswork out and lets me just enjoy the story as one continuous flow. More of that, please.
