I've seen this pop up a lot, and honestly, the chronological publishing order is the way to go to avoid any weird character or timeline dissonance. Start with 'A Dog's Purpose', because that's the whole foundation – it's the first life of that particular soul, you know? That book establishes everything: the cycle, the rules, the narrator's voice.
Then you move right into 'A Dog's Journey', which is the direct sequel following that same dog's soul into its next life with a very specific mission. The emotional through-line is continuous.
After those two, you can read 'A Dog's Promise', which is the third book in that core trilogy. It feels like a true capstone to that soul's story. The other books, like 'A Dog's Way Home', are more standalone within the same universe but follow a completely different dog. They're great, but they won't hit the same if you're invested in the original journey. The publishing order just lets the author's vision unfold as it was meant to.

Confusingly, there are two main threads. The central trilogy is about one specific dog's reincarnating soul: 1) 'A Dog's Purpose', 2) 'A Dog's Journey', 3) 'A Dog's Promise'. Read those in order, no question. The other books, 'A Dog's Way Home' and 'A Dog's Courage', are separate stories with different dogs, though they share the author's style and themes. You could read those anytime after the first book, really, but they won't spoil the trilogy. I accidentally read 'A Dog's Way Home' second and enjoyed it fine, but going back to 'A Dog's Journey' afterwards felt like returning to an old friend, which was nice in its own way. So maybe save the standalones for after the main three if you want that cohesive experience.

Definitely read them in the order they were published. 'A Dog's Purpose' first, then 'A Dog's Journey', then 'A Dog's Promise'. That's the core story. The other books exist in the same world but are separate. The trilogy follows a single narrative thread that builds on itself, so skipping around would be strange. Just look at the publication dates on the copyright page; that's your safest guide.

Stick with the trilogy order: Purpose, Journey, Promise. The other books are offshoots. The journey of that particular soul across the three books is what the series is famous for, and jumping around ruins the emotional buildup. The author definitely wrote them to be read in that sequence, with each book answering questions from the last and introducing new ones.

I think it depends on what you're after. If you want the complete, tear-jerking saga of one dog's soul, then absolutely do 'A Dog's Purpose', 'A Dog's Journey', and 'A Dog's Promise' in that order. That's the heart of it. But if you just want a taste of Cameron's writing to see if you like it, 'A Dog's Way Home' is a fantastic and more self-contained story. You won't be lost. I started there and loved it so much I went back for the trilogy. Honestly, you can't go wrong either way, but the emotional payoff of the trilogy is greater if you follow the proper sequence. The standalones are like bonus episodes.
