I've gotta push back on the idea that Rendell's development drives the whole plot—sometimes it feels like the arcs are already set and he's just shuffled through them. Like in the middle sections of the series, he makes this big moral choice, but the external events around the necromantic incursion would've happened anyway based on the antagonist's schedule. His internal turmoil is compelling, sure, but the story would've lurched forward regardless. The impact is more on the tone and the reader's emotional journey than on the actual sequence of events. You care more because he's suffering, but the battles happen on the same timetable.

That said, his regression phase in the third arc fundamentally alters the dynamics of the core group. When he temporarily loses his strategic foresight, the narrative has to pivot to the other characters picking up the slack, which introduces whole new subplots about the assassin character's loyalty and the scholar's hidden capabilities. That's where his development doesn't just impact an arc—it creates a new one from the debris of his failure. Without that personal collapse, we never get that deep dive into the side cast that everyone ended up loving.

So maybe I'm contradicting myself, but overall I think his growth reshapes the flavor of conflicts more than their fundamental structure. The story beats were probably outlined around the magic system's rules and the big villain reveal. Rendell's journey just makes those beats hurt more, or sometimes, like in the regression, it throws a wrench in and forces a detour that ends up being better than the original road.

It's the linchpin, honestly. Every major twist hinges on a change in his perspective or ability. The second arc's entire political thriller section only works because he's transitioned from a lone-wolf combatant to someone trying to understand court dynamics, forcing him into alliances he'd have previously avoided. His gradual acceptance of a caretaker role for the younger mages directly leads to the found-family defense sequence in the fourth book, which is the emotional peak for a lot of readers. Without his specific evolution, those arcs would just be generic action set pieces.
