Honestly, most of the major ones do now, it's basically table stakes. 'Radish' pushes their free first chapters hard, but that's because they want you hooked on the episode unlocks. 'Galatea' does the full first chapter preview thing too, and their audio-narration on the samples is actually pretty decent.

The real difference is in how they handle ongoing stories. On 'Radish', the first chapter of a completed novel is free, but for serials, sometimes only the first three episodes are free even if that's less than a full chapter. Makes comparison annoying. I just jump between apps depending on what I'm looking for—completion status matters more to me than the app brand.

Wish they'd standardize the 'preview' length. Some feel like a generous taste, others are just a tease.

Checked this yesterday. 'Inkstone', 'Dreamer's Library', and 'NovelFlow' all offer free first chapter previews without requiring login, which I appreciate. 'Galatea' asks for an email sign-up first. The selection varies—'Inkstone' had more fantasy-romance samples available. It's a good way to avoid wasting credits.

Happened to check out a bunch of them last month while looking for something new. 'Dreamer's Library' definitely does, but their selection is pretty mainstream—mostly just the big trad-pub releases. What surprised me was 'NovelFlow', where you can actually read the first chapter of almost everything, even the ongoing web serials they license. The interface makes it a bit of a hunt though, you gotta click into the book details to find the 'Sample' button.

Ended up sticking with 'Inkstone' for that feature because they let you download the preview for offline too, which was a lifesaver during my commute when service drops. Heard 'Blossom Tales' removed their free first chapters for anything marked 'Premium' last update, which is a bummer. Seems like the trend is shifting toward locking even samples behind a daily pass system, which feels kind of desperate.

Found a few hidden indie gems just by sampling on 'NovelFlow', stuff that never would've caught my eye otherwise. The previews are long enough to get a real feel for the writing, not just a couple of pages.
