As a tech enthusiast I have explored many of the various sites to download PDFs. I find that Automation = Safety. Hence my backup is entirely automated and will thus not fail as it depends on no human memory. On Linux I wrote a small bash script that uses rsync to synchronize my ~/Calibre Library folder and the entire ~/.config/calibre folder to a large enough folder on a backup drive. This script first checks for the presence and then kills the ‘calibre’ process (with a friendly warning message). Then it does the actual work using rsync with the archive flag and verbose switching. The whole operation is logged with a timestamp in the end. I use cron to run this little script every Sunday at 3 AM. A second cron job then uses rclone to synchronize the contents of the above-mentioned backup folder with a Tresorit cloud folder once a month. The output of all operations is written to a log file which I then occasionally check. As rsync only synchronizes changed blocks (unlike a full copy) it is very fast and efficient. All in all I have perfectly reliable and completely automated backup of all my ebooks (which is what Calibre is for in the first place) – and this with minimal initial investment of time and completely invisible afterwards.

It’s worth noting how amazing it is to be able to have this discussion. We’re talking about the risk of malware when accessing hundreds of thousands of books for free. This is modern wonder, made available to us. There’s virtually no risk here. The project is a non-profit, run with integrity. I worry more about the privacy policy of the social media account you read this on than I do a Gutenberg download. None of them track you/ sell your info. In the internet age, this is a rare and wonderful haven.

Simple. No frills. No features. That’s how safety is built into a system. The more complex a platform is, the more code it contains and the more features it has. And the more vulnerabilities it has. This service enables upload of files, their conversion to required format and their hosting. Fewer components – and thus fewer things that can go wrong and cause harm – is the main idea here. Sure enough, the lack of features means no safety net. No history of versions, no restore from backups, no customer support of any kind. This has become my normal way of listening to audiobooks. A practical tip: audiobooks can be streamed instead of downloaded. This becomes an option when you press the headphone icon on the audiobook screen, provided you have a good data connection or Wi-Fi connection. This is perfect for big books like the 30 hour plus epics. They can be a pain to store on your phone and so this way you don’t have to have them downloaded all the time. The streaming quality isn’t as good as downloading in the first place but in most cases of listening – in cars, on public transport, on workout etc – you won’t notice the difference.

My aim when using such sites is to remember that I am not a customer, I am product that the site is trying to sell to the advertisers that pay for it. I click, I look at ads, I even contract malware on occasion. This is how they make their money and so long as I am able to remember this, I can use such sites safely enough should I have the skill to keep the site’s business model at arm’s length whilst using the site for its content. As I mentioned before, for me, entertainment needs to be more than just ‘work’ to be enjoyable. Thus, I have no desire to visit the above mentioned sites. Although I am able to use them, I don’t want to. Firstly, I don’t have time for it during my leisure time. And secondly, there are far too many more interesting and far more pleasant ways to spend my free time and whilst closing down a pop-up or checking the task manager for any suspicious activity going on in the background, I can be doing so much more.
