I’m going to go against the grain and say maybe don’t worry about 'essential' reading. That sounds like a chore. Just find a story with a cool title or a neat cover in a collection and start there. The beauty of short stories is the low commitment. You can bounce off one and jump to another in minutes. The essential experience is the joy of discovery, not checking boxes.

I get why people suggest the classics, but some of them haven’t aged well, especially in their treatment of women or other cultures. I’d say it’s essential to read them with more modern, inclusive work. Read 'The Women Men Don’t See' by James Tiptree Jr. alongside an older story. It gives you a critical lens and shows the genre’s own evolution toward better representation.
