The title of the novel (A fault in our stars) refers to a misquote from the beginning of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar where a character says ‘the fault…is not in our stars’ i.e. it’s not fate’s fault that we’re where we are in life. The novel however reverses this to state that our ‘faults’ or our tragedies are written in the stars, i.e. our destinies are set out in front of us and we can search for meaning in life but it’s unlikely to be perfect. The novel explores the characters’ agency to search for love in the face of an unfair destiny. The struggle to come to terms with a life determined by circumstances is something that I have seen played out in the novel ‘Her Only Exception’ where a fiercely independent young woman finds her carefully constructed walls challenged by one person and explores how one person can change your life.

These words are another reference to Julius Caesar by Shakespeare, again altered to fit the context of the novel, “The Fault in Our Stars”. Once again the main characters are stuck between the cruel fate that has brought cancer into their lives, and the choices that they can make as humans. Cancer is not something that has happened because of something that Hazel or Augustus could have done, it is just a “fault” in the stars that controls their lives.

It also expresses the characters in the novel and their search for meaning. Even though Hazel and Gus never attempt to blame themselves or another for their circumstances they focus on what they can change i.e. their relationship and their choices and moments in life. The ‘fault’ in the stars does not have to be changed it can be accepted and lived with.

The title is also bittersweet to acknowledge that life is unpredictable and there are things that are outside of our control. In complaining about the ‘flaw’ in the stars that govern their lives, Hazel and Gus are able to find beauty in each other and their time on earth despite the chaos going on around them.

What’s interesting, though, is how the title contrasts with the actions of the main characters in the novel. Even though the title says that the ‘fault’ in the stars is our problem, for Hazel and Gus their cancer is not their fault. Instead, they are able to find love and meaning in their lives despite their circumstances. So, the title captures the bittersweet feeling that even though the stars are flawed they can still guide us.

I never got a good analysis of this in high school. It just sounded sort of sad and poetic to me. But now that I’m older, I see that it is saying that everything is flawed. The stars, the symbols we hold up highest as perfect, are all impossibly, fundamentally flawed. Love is flawed. Life is flawed. The human body is profoundly, deeply, unbearably flawed. The title of the book is rejecting all that. Hazel is not a sick, perfect angel. Gus is not a perfect, unusual, manic pixie dream boy. Their relationship is not perfect. I kind of always got this anyway – the “point” of The Fault in Our Stars being that the two main characters are star-crossed lovers, doomed from the start, just like Romeo and Juliet. But yes, in this case, they are star-crossed lovers – their time on this earth is short – but they’re not unlucky in love. Rather, they are unlucky in cancer, which is just something that happens sometimes. And it’s not unfair or anything – just random. So, really, the book is just acknowledging that yes, their love is real and beautiful, but the “fault” in the title (get it? the title of the book?) lies not with their love for each other, but with the random and sometimes cruel nature of life. In doing so, it distinguishes between romantic tragedy and medical tragedy, and allows for the possibility that the two main characters are not victims of their own destiny, but rather just victims of life.

This discussion of stars and faults reminds me of that poor movie about an asteroid hitting the Earth. Totally different movie. Sorry for the detour from that dreadful film. This book title is much classier.
