Merlin, Snape is the easy pick. But I’m stuck on Slughorn. He’s not evil, just vain and cowardly, and his one moment of shame—giving Tom Riddle the horcrux info—haunts him for decades. He spends years hiding from his past, collecting famous students like trading cards to feel important again, yet he still fights when it counts. That guilt-driven, slightly selfish but ultimately decent morality feels more relatable than a grand spy narrative. He’s a reminder that moral complexity isn’t always about big swings between good and evil; sometimes it’s just living with a regret you’re too embarrassed to fully face.

I’ve always thought Severus Snape’s story gets most of the attention for moral complexity, and yeah, it’s obviously huge—the whole double-agent thing, the bullying, the love that wasn’t really love but obsession. But sometimes I wonder if the sheer weight of his backstory overshadows how quietly messy Regulus Black’s arc is. He grows up in that pure-blood madness, gets the Dark Mark, seems all in, then has this completely private crisis of conscience over the horcrux. No grand redemption in front of everyone, no forgiveness from the people he hurt. He just... figures out it’s wrong and tries to fix it alone, knowing he’ll probably die and no one will ever know. That’s a different kind of moral struggle, less about performance and more about a quiet, personal reckoning with the beliefs you were raised in.
Draco’s another one where the complexity isn’t in a clean turn to good, but in the unraveling. Watching him in 'Half-Blood Prince' is brutal—he’s terrified, in over his head, but still too proud and prejudiced to ask for help. He has chances to be crueler than he is, and he doesn’t take them. The scene on the astronomy tower where he can’t kill Dumbledore gets debated a lot; some say it’s cowardice, but I read it as his foundational morality, the stuff his family drilled into him about pure-blood superiority, finally cracking under the reality of what that actually means. He’s not a hero by the end, but he’s not a villain either. He’s just a kid who got stuck and couldn’t go through with it, and that ambiguity feels very real.
Sometimes I think the most complex ones are those who don’t get a neat ending. Snape’s arc gets wrapped up with the memories. Regulus dies off-page. Draco survives but his future is kind of a question mark. That lack of resolution lets you sit with the messiness longer, you know?

War shall cause the lives of many and the weak shall suffer.
But lo, and behold, in a family of winter shall come the Blood Star of every generation.
Strength and might that shall spill the blood of its Adversary by the death with its soul."

She was never supposed to matter. The novel never gave her a name worth remembering.
After dying in a mundane accident, twenty-three-year-old Clara Quinn opens her eyes inside the pages of the fantasy novel she despised most — reborn not as the heroine, not as the villainess, but as an unnamed background character fated to die before the story even begins.
Her plan is simple: stay invisible. Attend the Imperial Academy of Asterveil, avoid every named character, and quietly survive a plot designed to destroy everyone foolish enough to interfere.
That plan lasts exactly one day.
During the entrance ceremony, Lady Morwen Ashvale — the infamous crimson-eyed prodigy that even crown princes fear — steps off her platform, walks past every noble heir waiting for her acknowledgment, and stops directly in front of Clara.
"You belong to me," Morwen says, loud enough for every student in the hall to hear. "Do not forget it this time."
This time.
Clara has never met this woman in her life. Yet Morwen looks at her as though she has been searching for centuries.
As shadows begin stalking Clara through the academy's cursed corridors — as the original story fractures and rewrites itself around her — Clara uncovers the truth that should be impossible: Morwen has lived this story hundreds of times. She has watched Clara die in every single one.
And in every timeline where Clara falls, Morwen burns the kingdom to ash.
She is not obsessed. She is grieving. She has always been grieving. And this time, she refuses to lose again.
Maeve Edgar's life plan was simple: survive until Selection Day, then disappear forever. As the pack's favorite scapegoat, she's spent years perfecting the art of being invisible. But when she gets kidnapped and dumped in front of the most dangerous prince in the kingdom, invisible stops being an option.
Prince Riven is everything the rumors say - cold, lethal, and absolutely not interested in playing nice. So why does he choose her for some mysterious academy that nobody's ever heard of? And why does being near him feel like remembering something she never knew she'd forgotten?
Turns out the Blood Moon Academy is where pack heirs compete in brutal trials to earn a place in the Royal Court. Now she's stuck fighting alongside the same spoiled brats who used to torment her, trying to prove she belongs somewhere she was never supposed to be.
The connection between them grows stronger with every moment they're in the same room. It's the kind of bond wolves used to have before the Great War - the kind everyone says is just a myth now.
But people are asking questions about her family, her past, her dreams of faces she's never seen. The wrong kind of people. And some of them seem very interested in making sure she doesn't get the answers she's looking for.
The Academy was supposed to be about earning her place in the world. Turns out it might be about remembering who she used to be.
My sister and I were chosen by the Blood Ledger on the same night.
In our first life, Lydia chose beauty. I chose genius.
She became the most desired girl in the vampire courts, but the Glamour Gift came with one condition. She had to win true devotion before the deadline.
She failed.
Men wanted her face. They wanted her body. They wanted to show her off like a rare jewel. But none of them loved her.
When the Blood Ledger took her beauty back, Lydia lost everything.
I became the youngest scholar in the Night Academy, solved forbidden blood theories, and caught the eye of Adrian Blackthorne, heir to the oldest vampire house.
So Lydia killed me.
She trapped me beneath the sunrise and smiled as I burned.
When I opened my eyes again, we were sixteen, standing before the Blood Ledger once more.
This time, Lydia stole the Scholar Gift before I could speak.
“Now I’ll be the genius everyone worships,” she said. “You can have beauty this time.”
Poor Lydia.
She thought she had stolen my future.
What she didn’t understand was that every blessing in this world had already been marked with a price.
Luna Beatrice is born a hybrid because her mother who was a witch and hungry for power cast a spell on an Alpha and tried to steal the powers of the most powerful witch and she failed.
The witch then sent a spell that broke the spell she had placed on the Alpha and she was exposed. In anger the Alpha killed Beatrice's mother and tried to kill his daughter Beatrice but she escaped and found herself married to a wizard who helped her suppress her wolf.
She got hungry for power and decided to leave Elisha the wizard for an Alpha of a wolf pack she had been stalking but for her to successfully be his mate, she killed his intended mate and used her blood to make a love portion.
All this she did with the help of her witch friend Deborah who is an outcast because she uses her witch powers to do evil and cause havoc. She successfully gets mated with the Alpha and they have a son, she suppresses the wizard in her son using her powers thus causing her to be slightly weaker and the spell she had cast on Elisha to not be able to trace her breaks. Elisha finds her and threatens to expose her and she promises to return to him but instead returns with the Alpha and the pack guards and they kill him after she accuses him of rape. She doesn't know she is pregnant but Elisha does and before he is killed he releases a spell giving Beatrice's unborn child all his powers.
Beatrice and Deborah have to kill the baby before she reaches eighteen but the child cannot be killed and she will kill them once she is of age. Luna Beatrice has to find a way to neutralize her daughter and hatches the plan that the child belongs to the wizard in hopes that the Alpha will kill her by his hand but the moment she is born he falls in love with her and protects her with his life.
I keep circling back to 'Manacled' by SenLinYu, though fair warning it's less a redemption arc and more about surviving after you're already broken. The focus is on Hermione in a dystopian Voldemort-wins scenario, and her 'redemption'—or maybe just re-humanization—is so gradual you almost miss it happening. It's not about a villain becoming good; it's about a hero who has to do monstrous things to achieve a greater good, and then has to find a way back from that.
Honestly, the character work with Draco is what sells it. He starts from a place of such ingrained cruelty and ideological poison, and the process isn't pretty or linear. He backslides, he's selfish, he's haunted. The complexity comes from the narrative not letting him off the hook for his past, even as he's forced into a new role. It feels earned, not prescribed. The fic made me rethink how we define 'dark'—sometimes it's the setting, and sometimes it's the moral compromises that stain the soul on the way to a better ending.
